Laserfiche Server 8.1 VMWare & Product Activation

asked on August 20, 2015

I have Laserfiche Server 8.1 running on Windows Server 2003 (about to be updated).  The system is backed up by a Dell AppAssure appliance that supports exporting the backup to a VMWare image.

I have lost some data from Laserfiche that I can collect from the VMWare image that I have exported of the backup done the day prior to the loss.  However, when booting the VMWare image with VMWare Workstation as the server starts up I get licensing issues from Windows and when trying to start Laserfiche it won't find my repository.  Investigating this further reveals that my Hardware Fingerprints and licensing needs to be redone to gain access.

My problem is, if I do reset the HWFprints and licensing for the VMWare image to gain access to the missing data and export that data, will this have any impact on my live running Laserfiche server?

I can't reset the licensing on the VMWare copy if it's going to affect my live in place Laserfiche server.

Any group wisdom gladly accepted.

If I'd read this correctly then it sounds like you will need to deactivate the license on the current server, bring up the restored server, activate this server and then export a briefcase of the missing documents. Copy this to a shared location and then deactivate this server. You should then be able to bring up the current server again, reactivate the license and import the briefcase.

I went through these steps recently except it wasn't necessary to do anything with the license as the hardware fingerprint was the same on the cloned VM.

It's always a good idea to keep a copy of the server hardware fingerprints, activation keys and host ID's in case you can't access the server (due to hardware failure for example) as it makes deactivation easier.
