Question

Laserfiche upgrade and migration to another server from 8.3 to 9.1

asked on May 16, 2014 Show version history

I beleive I understand the basic process to do this. The issue is, I would like to be able to install 9.1 on the destination server if at all possible.

As I understand, I cannot do this because the license is being used by the old server. Is there a way I can install 9.1 without the license activation key temporarily?

Another question about licensing. If I had access to another separate activation key, and used that one to get passed the installation, can i disable that "temp" key and activate the proper key once I deactivate the old server?

Currently we are using Laserfiche 8.3 Avante.

Thank you.

You would probably need to get a temp license key from Laserfiche.  Usually we just deactivate the old server (via deactivation syntax) and then turn the services off.  The install of the new server is really quick which is why it is normally not an issue.

If you do activate with a temp license to get up and running, you would simply run the ActivationTool.exe again at a later point and type in the new key to re-activate the server.

I have found, by accident, that if I use the unattended server installation with a blank key specified that it installs anyways with no license. You can then add the license using the ActivationTool.exe

To clarify a couple items:

You are correct that you can't have two servers running at the same time with the same license - you would need to uninstall or otherwise deactivate the first Server in order to activate the second.

As Chad notes, technically you do not need to activate to actually perform the installation - of course, you won't be able to use the Server until it is activated, so all that really gets you is an installed Server and doesn't really help with much.

That said, there's nothing otherwise restricting you from uninstalling the current Server on the old machine, installing the new Server on the new machine and registering the repository to the new Server. Is your main concern the downtime while the repository is being upgraded to the new Server format? Keep in mind that if you do want to keep the old one up while a copy is being upgraded to 9.1, you'll need to account for any changes in the meantime.
