Question

What is the oldest version of Repository Server can Forms 12 connect to

asked on June 4

I have a customer looking to upgrade Forms to fix the issue with cutoff fields at the bottom of PDF pages from the Save To Repository activity.  We want to know if Forms 12 is backwards compatible with LFS and if so, how far back does it support?  Or do we also need to move them to LFS 12 before moving them to Forms 12?

Forms (and Workflow) will connect to older versions of Laserfiche Server. While you can have v12 connecting to a version 9 server, we really don't recommend that big a split between versions.

While I don't know a direct answer to your question of whether Forms 12 has any dependencies that rely on Laserfiche Repository Server 12, this post from Enterprise Architect Samuel Carson suggests that the recommended installation order would be Directory Server, Admin Hub, Laserfiche Repository Server, then Forms/Workflow, etc.

I would guess that some of the new Forms functionality may be impacted if the Laserfiche Repository Server is not upgraded prior.

Is there a particular reason not to perform a full environment upgrade rather than just Forms?

This is not a trick question, nor should it be hard to get an answer for, yet I can find no documentation for Forms 12 requirements and have gotten no answer from Laserfiche.

There can be any of many reasons for not wanting to upgrade all of the other LF products, and the reason is not relevant to the question.

With so many changes in LF12 in terms of functionality (eg. metadata capabilities and improvements), I too am curious if upgrading Forms without upgrading LFS would have any negative implications.  Hopefully Laserfiche can provide an official response.  In the meantime I did find the following entries in the System Admin Guide for LF12 which may be of some use.  Note: It doesn't appear that the LF12 documentation is fully updated as there are still some references to version 11.

Under Installing Laserfiche Forms it states in the Post-Installation section:

  • Laserfiche Server (version 9 or later) or Laserfiche Directory Server must be installed.
  • Laserfiche Forms can be upgraded before the Laserfiche Server is upgraded. This means that you can have a Laserfiche Forms 11 installation with a Laserfiche Server 9.1 installation.
  • Laserfiche Forms requires Laserfiche Audit Trail (version 11 Update 4 or later) and Laserfiche Full Text Search (version 11 or later) in order to use Forms auditing features.

Under Upgrading to Laserfiche 12 it states in the Support for Previous Versions section:

It is not necessary to upgrade all of your Laserfiche applications at the same time. We recommend upgrading your Laserfiche Directory Server implementation first, followed by the Laserfiche Repository Server. From that point, you can upgrade other products in any order you prefer.

Until Laserfiche updates the documentation to LF12 or provides a response, I would use this as the oldest version supported.
