Moving Laserfiche to a VM server - The steps to reactivating or renewing license ?

asked on April 17, 2018 Show version history

Hi,

We have moved all our VM's to new server and were able to use LFDS to generate new licenses, however moving our main VM server with LFDS on new VM failed and we were not able to activate the license, kept saying failed to renew,  " Product activation failed; please contact Laserfiche Support for assistance. (Maximum number of activations has been reached for this key ".

What is the best way to try again ? We tried placing a support call to have someone on standby for an hour to help with the final step of reactivation, but apparently being on LSAP does not entitle us that ? It is taking 2 to 3 days to get emails responded to when we send to the LF support email. I am afraid that we will be down for days unable to reach support. Is there any possible way to not run into license related issues  ?

We are on LF 10.2 and just have 1 VM remaining to move to the new server, but licensing issues are a hurdle for us at this stage.

Your VAR is (or should be) your main support channel.  If you contact them, they should be able to get the issue resolved in a more timely manner.

If you want/need support directly from Laserfiche and with a 24 hour response time, you can pay more and get premium LSAP.

We bought direct from LF itself and do not have a VAR. LSAP's support SLA is 48 hrs ? It's a simple question : how does one move a VM with LFDS to a new server, what are the proper steps so clients systems do not go down ? Maybe other folks can chime in those, that have done a move to a new hardware.

In order to activate LFDS on a new server, you must first de-activate it on its current server.

As Bert said, you need to deactivate the current Directory Server before you can use its license on a new server. Uninstalling it will deactivate it, or you can use this tool to deactivate without uninstalling.

Then, install and reactivate Directory Server on the new computer.

For more information, see the "Licensing Constraints" section of this white paper.

In my case, image of the current server was migrated to a VM and old server formatted. When we try renewing master license we get "Maximum number of activations has been reached for this key: Activation failed. (LFDS10)(LMO24)". Any work around please?

@Joseph Mensah

Migrating a physical box to a VM will result in the hardware fingerprint changing.  The license (activation) is tied to the original fingerprint so it cannot just be renewed with the new fingerprint.  You MUST deactivate the original activation to remove the old hardware fingerprint so that you can activate it with the new hardware fingerprint.

Thanks Bert. The problem is, the server was formatted and decommissioned. Not to be used anymore. Not sure how to deactivate it.

Open a support case and they can help you.
