Question

File size grows when tiff image is moved from windows folder into Laserfiche forlder?

asked on March 16, 2016

Hi Everyone

Recently I have transferred large volume of tiff images with Import Agent 9.0.464 from windows folder into Laserfiche repository.  The file size in repository is 3 times bigger than file size in windows folder.

Why is that?

The other thing I noticed when you create an new tif or drag a file from window into repository it does not create any pages for the file but all the tiffs I transferred by Import Agent created pages for the files.

Why is that?

Is there is way to reduce the size of the imported files or remove the pages without removing the original document?

Under import agent processing, tap I had everything checked off including OCRing option.

Hi Farzali,

The released Import Agent 10 follows the settings of the following user attributes:

  1. [Settings]ImportJPEGCompressionLevel
  2. [Options]DefaultBWFormat
  3. [Options]DefaultColorFormat

Thanks,

Qinmei

A case has been opened with Support; the thread will be updated when resolved.

In Import Agent, under Profile > Options > File Types, uncheck the box next to TIF/TIFF. This will prevent Import Agent from generating a page from the TIF file and changing the compression of the file. For TIFs which have already been imported and converted into Laserfiche pages, to decrease the file size they will need to be re-imported; TIF images are not kept as "electronic files" so there is no way to "delete the page" without deleting the entire document.

Hi James

Note : the case says close, I did not mean to close it, I still need help!

I tested your suggestion on my own VM ( I don't have access to client LF this weekend) and the file got imported into Laserfiche with its original size and there wasn't any LF pages.

This solution solved size issue but introduced another issue and that is, now the file is not opening with Laserfiche viewer and when you open it, it only opens with application  such as windows viewer.   One of client's requirement is to be able to annotate the files and this is only available if the files open in LF viewer.  Since the client had tiffs to migrate into Laserfiche we were expecting the files to open with LF viewer.

If I have to I will run Import Agent and Re-import all the files into the repository.   We need to have the following result:

1. After importing the files, we need to be able to open the files with LF viewer (to annotate)

2. Have the file to keep its original size

What are our options to fix this problem?

Unfortunately,  no fix was available, according to Laserfiche this is how Import Agent treats tif files with gpeg compression, no solution provided and LF closed the case.

I tested the files with QF, the files came in their original size, format, and we could open them in LF viewer for annotations.   Client purchased the QF and I moved all 1.6 million files into LF with no problem.

The above statements can be misleading. The root of the issue is that other Laserfiche products handle TIF compression methods in a particular way that currently Import Agent does not follow. While there is no current fix available, SCR 142478 was filed to have Import Agent follow the same procedure as other Laserfiche applications which would allow for the desired behavior. It is currently targeted for fix in the upcoming release of Import Agent 10.
