Question

Detach SQL Express 2005 database and attach to SQL Express 2012 Instance

asked on July 28, 2015

Hey,  This may be an obvious answer for a dba, but I have a customer with LF 8 using SQL Express 2005.

We are moving them to a new server with SQL Express 2012 and upgrading LF to version 9.2.  Can I simply detach the 2005 databases and attach to the 2012 instance or are there more steps with a LF database?

Would it be better to upgrade the existing SQL Express 2005 to SQL Express 2012 then detach the db and attach to the new SQL Express 2012?

Any help would be great.

You don't need to upgrade in place. Detaching the database from SQL 2005 and attaching it to SQL 2012 is fine. Un-register the repository from the Laserfiche Admin Console first and re-register it afterwards pointing to the new SQL server.

I know I am late to this party, but I thought I would throw in my 2 cents...

I would make a backup of the database through the SQL Management Studio on the old server.  Then I would restore the DB to the new server.  This leaves the old SQL in tact and untouched just in case you had to quickly move back to it.
