Question

How many Forms participant licenses are needed when two separate Forms databases/servers will be used by the same number of people?

asked on May 8, 2015

We have a client that would like to install Forms twice - but instead of having both installations point to the same Forms database, they want the installations to point to two separate databases.

They plan to acquire many Forms Participant licenses. My question is, if the two Forms installations will be pointing at two different databases, does the same AD account need to have two separate Forms Participant licenses to be able to log in to the two different servers?

If yes, will this change with Directory Services 10 when all web apps start authenticating through that instead?

Forms Authenticated Participant licenses are allocated to the individual Forms Servers, in a similar way that repository named user accounts are allocated to individual Laserfiche Servers. I actually don't think it would matter whether they were attached to the same database or not, it's simply that authenticated participants get allocated to a specific Forms Server. Note that this is specific to Authenticated Participants, logging in with Directory named user licenses would have no restriction, since that's across the entire system.

I would not expect Directory Services 10 to impact this, but at that's in the future I'm not 100% certain on that aspect.

Lets say I have 20 participant licenses, can I split them up between 2 servers?

With Directory Service (LFDS), you have 2 options:

1. Let LFDS manage the participant licenses. In this case, each user gets its own participant license and it doesn't matter how many Forms servers they connect to. You do have to have Forms set up for single sign-on through LFDS.

2. Allocate the participant licenses to each Forms server and let Forms manage them at that level. In this case, you can split licenses however you want between the servers, but you will need more than one for a user if that user needs to connect to both servers. Forms authentication should be set up to use the repository in this case.

What if its Avante?

With Avante you specify how many users you want in your Forms purchase.

So in my situation the customer bought 20 forms participants. We just added another server in the DMZ so there are 2 forms servers but both are using the same database. On one forms server it shows 20 licenses, on the other it shows 0.

If this is a Laserfiche Avante system, you should have 2 different activation keys. One will have the 20 participant users, and one will not. The participant users are tied to a corresponding Forms activation key.

So I can only have 20 users on one server and they cannot be shared?

Yes, an individual authenticated participant license is allocated to a specific Forms Server.

do you know if it would be possible to have the 20 license broken apart into a 15 and a 5?
