Scanning with LF Version 9

posted on April 23, 2015

Since the release of version 9, it seems to me that the number of bugs or issues with scanning has increased.  Old reliable Fujitsu scanners are no longer working with Scan Connect, the paper size and source options show up blank and you have to hit the red check to change those settings.  Just more and more issues with LF scanning and it almost appears that LF is not taking these issues seriously.  Scanning is the backbone of Laserfiche.  This is how our clients put new documents into Laserfiche and there are so many client out there that this is all they do with LF.  They don't use Forms or QF or WF, they just need to scan their documents in.  So when we do an upgrade for them and then have to tell them "Oh well that is a known issue and here try this work around", I can tell you from experience they don't really like that answer.

Example:  Just worked with a client yesterday.  They were on 8.3.1 and Scan Connect 8.3.  Upgraded her client to 9.2.1 still with Scan Connect 8.3.  She has been using a Fujitsu fi-7260 (and I know that LF says they are working with Fujitsu on the driver).  After the upgrade the user could no longer hit the continue scanning button or even just scan a 2nd document, Scan Connect would freeze and you had to reboot the PC for anything to start communicating again.  I went in and uninstalled anything that I knew caused issues with the new PaperStream drivers, the Control Panel thing, the PaperStream Capture and nothing worked.  The user said can we just go back to the Version 8 client so I can at least scan because I use the continue scanning button all the time.  So that is exactly what we did, I uninstalled 9.2.1 and we installed the 8.3.1 client back on her PC with Scan Connect 8.3.  We rebooted 1 more time and went into the client and LF scanning and this thing started working like a sewing machine.  We could scan, continue scanning, scan 5 documents in one session, it was working awesome.  The user was very happy.

In my opinion that tells me that maybe it is not the Fujitsu PaperStream driver at all, maybe it is actually LF 9 scanning that is causing the issue and headaches that our users have been feeling since upgrading to Version 9.  Once again this is just my opinion and felt I needed to share because not only are we (VARS) feeling the effects of this because our clients are calling in for support, but our clients are feeling it even more because they hear that upgrading is great, but then they end up having all this trouble with Scanning.

Thanks - Derick

Derick,

We have tested the Fujitsu fi-7160 using its PaperStream IP ISIS driver against Laserfiche Scanning 9.2 and ScanConnect 8.3 and had no issues with it. Please see this previous thread which discusses the scanner in question.

I would highly recommend making sure that you have downloaded their most recent driver from here. Note that this is for driver version 1.10.01411.19001 which was released 12/8/2014.

Thank you Alex.  The only reason I started this thread was because of the previous threads that I have seen about the 7000 series scanners and the PaperStream drivers.  I did verify they had that version of driver because of the previous Answers threads.  I tried everything I knew to try when it comes to scanning and Scan Connect.  But as I have stated, rolling them back to 8.3.1 resolved the issue that I worked almost 2 hours on.  I wanted the 7260 to work with client 9.2.1 and SC 8.3, but it would just not work.  But uninstalling 9.2.1 and re-installing 8.3.1 worked perfectly.  So this is the only reason I even began this thread this morning was because of this and about 3 other scanning issues that involved separate clients, but all involved LF 9+, Scan Connect, and the FI-7000 series.

If there is a specific issue you're running into, please open a support case.

As much as it pains me (a big Fujitsu scanner fan) the issue with LF ScanConnect and the Fujitsu driver is not something that Laserfiche can fix.  Fujitsu has changed their software and driver, braking the stability that we are all accustomed to from Fujitsu.  These changes makes it very hard to configure and use the Fujitsu scanners with ScanConnect.

We went through a similar situation with Kodak a few years back.  The Kodak ISIS driver changed how it loaded some settings and broke ScanConnect.  While I get that the customer just wants it to work, Laserfiche has no control over the drivers and when the driver changes, the new driver does not always adhere to current standards.

We had to move away from selling the Kodak's a few years ago and we have moved away from selling the Fujitsu's now.  My personal opinion is that I do not want to sell a scanner that does not come with Kofax.  Selling a scanner with Kofax gives the customer an outstanding scanning platform with the stability that is required for production environments.

Bert I completely understand where you are coming from and until yesterday I was 100% on board with that thought.  However, with this client, I didn't touch Scan Connect or the Fujitsu driver.  I never re-installed Scan Connect 8.3 the only thing that we changed was the LF client.  They were running 8.3.1 and scanning was working.  We then installed 9.2.1 and scanning broke.  We then reinstalled 8.3.1 and now scanning with the 7260 works perfectly.  So the Fujitsu driver did not change, but the LF scanning client did change and scanning would not work.  That is why I feel that this is something that LF could look into a bit further.
