Question

Is the licensing for Audit Trail necessary for Laserfiche to create audit logs?

asked on March 25, 2015

In order for audit logs to be created is the licensing necessary with Laserfiche or does it create these audit logs automatically regardless of the license? If it is the case that the audit logs are not created due to licensing is there a way to view this within the Laserfiche DB?

All repositories will have an AUDIT folder with a [RepositoryName].log file in it. However, if the Laserfiche Server doesn't have any Audit Trail feature (Starter, Standard, Advanced) then it will not write anything to that file. In essence, nothing will be audited.

If later the customer decides to get Audit Trail, then once the Laserfiche Server is re-licensed and events are configured to be audited for trustees, the Laserfiche Server will then start writing to the log file.

In terms of what information you can get from the repository database itself, you can find out things like who created an entry or when it was created. However, you won't get any real useful audit data as it can't tell you which user deleted a document or who modified a field value, etc.
