Upgrading Workflow 8.0 on WinServer 2003 to Workflow 9.2 on WinServer 2012 - can't load the Migration utility on old server

asked on October 27, 2014

Original Server is 2003 R2.  When I go to install the Workflow Migration Utility (v9.2), it says I need a minimum of WinServer 2005.  What to do?

Would there be any issues if I just export the 8.0 workflows, and import into 9.2, and reconfigure the server settings?

Thanks!

You can move to the new server and run the migration from there.  See this thread: https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/59433/Moving-Workflows-from-one-server-to-another

Alternatively, you can simply export the workflows as WFI files which include the starting rules.  Once the new server is up and running, you can simply import the exported workflows.  Note however that this negates the benefit of running the migration.  You need to make sure that all the workflows have stopped processing documents and have ended to make sure that no documents are stopped midstream.

Are there any complex functions such as SDK scripts?

If you don't have anything complex like SDK scripts your method should work fine. The only issues I ever had with upgrading older versions involved SDK scripts.

The tricky part is setting up all of your starting rules again. It really just depends on how many you have.

Chris, NO scripts. There are @ 6 workflows.

As long as you can recreate the starting rules easily I'd say go for it. The worst that can happen is that you are in the same boat you are now. Workflow is still there and running on that old machine.

I'm not sure but you may even be able to temporarily redirect workflow to the new machine if you had to. I 'm pretty positive workflow 8 will still connect to and work with a 9.2 server in a pinch if it didn't work.

You can use the 8.3 Migration Utility on Windows 2003. That part of Workflow hasn't actually changed between 8.3 and 9.2.
