Question

RIO disaster recovery

asked on October 23, 2014

Working on RIO disaster recovery plan. Main server (VM virtual) hosting RIO license database, LF server and other products copied to other location multiple times during day for disaster recovery. We need to be able restore Laserfiche in the shortest possible time in case of disaster. Should we expect the following:

1. We will need to deactivate Master license using command line with HW fingerprint of the failed server.

2. We will need to activate Master license on the restored server using command line or ActivationTool

3. We will need to relicense all LF applications hosted on this server.

4. There is no need to relicense any LF applications hosted on others servers.

Please correct me or share your experiences.

If above statements are correct, is there any way to automate this process? Is it reasonable to expect this type of utility to be developed in the future?

Hey Mike,

Sorry about the long delay in getting back to you.  It sounds like you have the process figured out.

There likely isn't a way to automate this process as each set of applications hosted on the failed server will be unique.  When dealing with backups, we recommend automation in order to regularly and consistently backup the data, as this would be very monotonous if it needed to be done manually every day or every few hours.  In cases where we're dealing with scenarios that don't come up often (restoring Laserfiche to a new server, for example) we don't emphasize automation quite as heavily as the amount of time that you would save is much smaller.  Furthermore, restoring a backup to a new server can be a tricky process and should have some form of manual oversight.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

Mike,  I read your post from 2014.  How are you copying over the "RIO license database, LF server and other products copied to other location multiple times during day for disaster recovery"?  Noting the steps you outlined for DR purposes, have you ever been able to test this?

Michelle
