Server Upgrade/Workflow

posted on September 30, 2014

So I have a customer running LF 9.1.1 and WF 9.0 on a Windows Server 2003.  The DB's are stored on a SQL Server running Server 2008.  We're going to be upgrading their Laserfiche Server from Srvr 2003 to 2008 R2, however, they want us to "test" to make sure everything is working before we make the cut...so in a sense, we're going to have 2 Laserfiche Servers running at the same time (with Workflow).  However, when I go to Workflow Configuration, it wants me to upgrade the Workflow DB (I'm running WF 9.1.1 on the new server).  I don't want to upgrade the DB as it's still being used in production and I'm concerned that since the production server is running WF9.0 that it won't work with an upgraded DB.  Any suggestions/best practices or insight to how I may be able to do this?  Having a second SQL Server is not an option so SQL has to stay where it's at on the server it's on.  Thanks!!

Ok...so I can do that...not a problem.  Do I then just re-configure workflow to point at the old Workflow DB once we "go live" with the Production and allow it to upgrade?

Yes.

Ok, so then why not set up the new Workflow server with its own SQL DB (on the same SQL server)?

We just wanted to get the new server up and running and then test the Workflows to make sure they all work before we "go live" with Production.  I don't really want to have to workflows writing to the same db...but the last time they upgraded, we had all sorts of issues with Workflow and they were down for days...so they just want to make sure this time, it's tested before switching over.  I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!

Are you saying you want 2 Workflow servers writing to the same SQL database? That's not a supported configuration.

What exactly are you trying to test for them?
