Question

Multiple Repositories and RIO licenses

asked on August 28, 2014

Sorry if this has been answered but I could not find anything concrete for this situation.

There is a RIO system.  This system (including license manager) is on Domain A.

Server licenses are allocated for various servers in different parts of the country.  All on their own domain.  When generating the licenses for these servers, we allocate out the appropriate amount of users.  We cannot add users as named users to the License Manager as the Windows accounts come from different domains and locations.

The question comes from multiple repositories.  Say one of the servers has two repositories.  Now normally with Windows Account in the License Manager, this is totally fine.  Since they are a named user in the License Manager, we simply add them to the Windows Account node in both repositories and trust them.

However in this case, the server has been allocated 10 licenses.  Even if we setup the users in the Windows Account node of the repository, will it not take multiple licenses for cross repository access?

So if John wanted access to Repository A and B, we would have to add his Windows Account in both Repository A and B.  Then we would have to make him a named user in that menu in both repositories since John cannot be added to the License Manager (different domains and such).  So each person that needs cross repository access requires two licenses?

Again this works just fine of the named users are all in the License Manager as Windows Accounts.  Then they can get into whatever repository/server they want as long as security is setup.  This is a little different as we are using allocated users (still setting them up as Windows accounts).

Sorry if that does not make sense but it's surprisingly difficult to put into words.  Am I thinking about this correctly or am I missing something?

Thanks!

That is just how licensing functions. You either license those user accounts per repository, or you do the named user windows accounts.

Is there a reason you aren't adding the windows accounts for multiple domains? Rio is set up to be able to handle multiple domains just fine and really just locks down to the user Active Directory SID as you can see if you open up a server license file. When adding a windows account to the license manager, just go into locations and hit the Plus sign to add another directory server

The Client cannot see the other domains.  It is possible that they do not want to open up or use the domain accounts in the License Manager either.  We are wondering if this is possible for local users that have been allocated out from the license manager.

John's response is spot on, as is your understanding of user licensing in Rio. Domain accounts, when licensed in License Manager, work across servers. Licenses assigned to a specific server allow you to create repository named users, which are only valid in a specific repository. This is by design, and there is no way around it at the moment.
