PDF docs when snapshot into LF...some pages are unreadable...why?

asked on June 6, 2014

I have a problem when snapshotting documents into LF.  All look fine as PDFs, but when captured in LF, some are unreadable.  Our IT guy has checked our end & can see no reason, so has said it is a LF conversion problem.  Any ideas on a remedy for this?  We are using Snapshot 8.

This sounds like a printer driver issue. Snapshot uses the Black Ice virtual printer driver to generate images from pdfs. Upgrading to the latest version of Snapshot 9.1 will most likely fix this issue. If upgrading isn't an option at the moment, then I would check out this KB article for some workarounds.

What do you mean by "unreadable"?  I am assuming that you mean Snapshot generates invalid characters.  In which case, there are a couple of things you can try that are found in this kb article.  Also, sometimes, this can be a profile issue.  Have another user try using Snapshot with the PDF on another machine.  If it is a profile issue, it will work for one user but not another.

Alan is correct. We have had this problem for a long time and 9.1 appears to have fixed it.

The workarounds provided in the KB article work except for one caveat:

If you disable advanced printing options on the snapshot printer (workaround 1), then users will not be able to snapshot multiple worksheets of an Excel workbook.

Another thing you might want to try is to enable Floyd-Steinberg in the file formats tab under the snapshot printing preferences. If the PDFs are actually grayscale or color, Floyd-Steinberg does a much better job at the monochrome tiff conversion.

Thanks I do use that for any color pages...works for that, but other pages still come through with odd symbols in the body of the docs!

We had a similar issue to this with PDFs coming in where the text looked garbled or as if in another language.  We found that changing a setting in Adobe fixed the problem.

This is a workaround we used for a while. Updating the latest version of snapshot should take care of this issue. We have not run into it since getting to 9.1.1.
