Upgrade from Laserfiche 9.0.2 to 9.1.1

asked on May 6, 2014 Show version history

 Hi All,

A client has to upgrade from Laserfiche Rio 9.0.2 to 9.1.1. They are using windows domain account and single sign on to login to laserfiche. They are using external tables connected to Ms SQL View to populate dynamic fields in metadata templates. They have so far been storing Ms office, pdf and txt files in the LF repository.

We have three Main servers. Find below list of laserfiche components installed in the servers

Server 1 (Win2012) : Laserfiche Rio Server, workflow, License manager, Lf Administration, Import Agent, Photo Docs, Volume Converter

Server 2 (Win2012): SQL server

Server 3 (Win2012): Web access, Advance Audit trail

Client Workstation OS: XP SP3, Windows 7, Windows 8 (on VDI-in-a-box)

It would be grateful if someone could advise on:

1. Steps on how to proceed on to upgrade the servers and the Client Workstations

2. Any implication of the upgrade to existing documents in repositories and volumes

3. Impact of the upgrade on the actual environment

4. Impact of the upgrade on Access rights

5. Any other comment

Regards

Sweety

I believe what Bill is referring to is this issue that can occur when connecting from a 9.0.2 Client to a 9.1 repository. There was a bug in a 9.0 Client that turned out to be more likely to occur when connecting to a 9.1 server. It's not the case, strictly speaking, that 9.0.2 Clients won't work with 9.1, but if you use Business Processes, it may be necessary to upgrade the desktop Client to 9.1 to avoid the issue. We have not seen the issue with 9.0.3 Clients connecting to 9.1, so that may also work.

Here the most important thing is that the 9.0.2 client will not work with the 9.1.1 server, so you need to be prepared to update the server and the clients all in the same time frame.  This is very unusual, in that Laserfiche has always maintained excellent backward compatibility.

Back up your databases in case, update the server, update the clients and then your other components.  The License server stays the same.  All your security is maintained; no documents or document attributes (OCR, annotations) should change in any way.  The upgrade/installation process (i.e. software) is generally seamless.

Make sure you have the Admin password and the passwords to all of your service accounts in advance.

Bill, I am pretty sure that 9.1.1 server is client backwards compatible at least all the way down to client 7.2 (installed properly). We went in a matter of months from server 8.3 to server 9.0 to server 9.1.1, our system layout is very similar to the original question and I agree that having backups of both the repositories and the SQL (plus all the additional supporting applications) is a must before any upgrade. the upgrade process is very painless and quick and you can do silent installations to your clients after the server conversion.
