Moving License Manager VM

asked on December 12, 2013 Show version history

If the license manager is installed on a separate VM that is licensing many LF servers in the network, what happens if the license manager VM is moved?

The servers will go into grace period mode if they can't contact the License Manager. You could give the new VM the same name or just DNS alias it to the old name so the validation will still find it.

Hi Miruna, what is the grace period? 24 hours?  This will be good to know when planning a server migration strategy.

Hi Miruna,

Thanks for the response but it is still not clear to me why would the servers go into the grace period mode if the LM is moved? Can you please also clarify why would I need to give the VM (LM) a name or a DNS alias for validation?

Products licensed through the License Manager periodically check with the License Manager to see whether their license is still valid. If the License Manager is unavailable, they go into a grace period. If the grace period expires, then the software stops working. If the License Manager can be reached during the grace period, then the software resumes normal function.

I have moved the License Manager VM server to new hardware and am not able to activate the database after moving it.  The database was detached (deactivated) before the vm was moved but when I attempt to attach the database I get an error that the activation tool didn't work.  Result is I'm completely dead with the old server not working or the new one I moved to.  I have to contact support to resolve.  Any suggestions on how to manage disaster without being offline for a day?

The LFActivationLog.txt file created the following entry:

Deb,

Our activation database only shows activation attempts today, but no deactivation. The previous activity on that key was in October.

You need to contact your reseller to open a support case so the key can be properly deactivated.

It seems that "detaching" the license database does not Deactivate the license.  My reseller has contacted Laserfiche to find out why but also advised that I do the manual process explained in this article: https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1012301

I ended up having to bring the VM back to it's original hardware to get it to come back online.  I had to "attach" (activate) the license when I brought it back up.  Seems to deactivate on the server but not with Laserfiche?

I will use the manual "deactivate" command in the future and check Activations Remaining on the support site to make sure the 0 changes to 1.

What version of the License Manager were you using? Older versions did not encrypt the activation key in the license, so they couldn't deactivate when the database was detached. Manual deactivation is safer.

Quick question on this.

To Deactivate License Manager I'm assuming you can use the Activationtool.exe in the same way you do for other products and just use the RIO activation key? Or is there something separate for License Manager?

Activationtool.exe -deactive -key -hostid bla bla?

Nothing different, same command line applies.

We are using Directory Server for our licensing, can I de-activate our license in Directory Server, move the VM running Directory Server, and re-activate in Directory server and be back to usual?

We are at v10 of LF Rio, and all products we are running.  Latest versions.  We tried moving the VM, and licensing went foobar, so reverted.  Looking for the correct process.
