Question

Can RIO licensed servers use SQL express?

asked on December 10, 2013

We have a client where they have several sites that used to use 1 Centrally located LF server using Standard SQL and Laserfiche Standard system.  Now they're upgrading to RIO and each location will be getting their own LF server instance instead of sharing, as well as having their own SQL.  Are some of these sites able to use SQL express as their DBMS or will each location be required to purchase and use Standard SQL since that was their previous licensing model?

There isn't anything on the Laserfiche Rio side that would prevent using SQL Express instead of full SQL. I would primarily be worried about the limitations imposed by SQL Express. Last time I checked, it can only use 1 processor (socket) and up to 1 GB of RAM. The RAM especially can become a bottleneck real quickly if there's a lot of activity in the system.

You may want to evaluate the workloads on their current repositories now and decide which ones should stay on full SQL and which ones can be downgraded to SQL Express.
