Query about Licensing

asked on May 4, 2013 Show version history
I have a query about sharing licensing. A customer with an Avante system has noticed that if they assign two different Windows accounts to a Laserfiche login - and that login has a licensed assigned to it - that two people can simultaneously share a license.

As well as the obvious issues (the threads are needed for Office integration and this takes a sale away from us) would they be breaking the terms of the license agreement? Just in case, I've advised them that they probably are breaking the terms of use but can you confirm this for me please?

Thanks for checking in about this!  You are correct, that is a violation of the license agreement.  Allowing multiple users to log into Laserfiche with a single license amounts to multiplexing, which is not allowed.  Here’s the specific verbiage from the EULA:

If a License File indicates that the Software includes "named user connections," the Licensee may allocate the named user connections to specific individuals or devices in its discretion. When a named user connection is allocated to a specific individual person's Laserfiche or external directory account, that individual may not share the use of that named user connection by sharing the use of the account with others.

So, basically, they can either purchase a license for each user, or they can use a device license to allow multiple users to log in from a single device.  Linking two or more AD accounts to a single licensed trustee is not a legal option.  Let us know if you’ve got any more questions, or need help with the customer.
