How to set target or destination install directory or volume for laserfche 12

asked on June 29 • Show version history

EDIT: This targeting installation folders was changes in v11, with the first release of the LF installer. See Craig's reply below.

Hi all,

As the title says. With the latest installer, I can't see how to set the destination. There's no "custom" option and I've tried using msiexec switches (TARGETDIR and INSTALLDIR). Is there a JSON key/value for the custom install scripts?

I can't find the query on Answers so does that mean I've missed something obvious?

There's not a way that I know to redirect to another location except C:\

I ran into this previously and that post is here and it contains how I got around that.

Oh, Interesting... Thanks,

I see that post was for v11, which I had filtered out. With the last releases of v11 I installed, selecting an  path was possible, even if it meant custom install commands.  My last few installations of v12 were for customers who didn't specify an application volume.

Data planning isn't my speciality, and I just make the wishes of my customers come true. My larger customer have asked me to make the following three distinctions for installation locations:

1. System Volume software: Generally .Net and Windows components that require Windows or System32 folders and registry .dat files. The system volume will always increase a little.

2. Application install files: Folder where the contents are static or show minimal growth after installation. These go on a local volumes.

3. Logs and Data: Audit, Full text, Web logs, documents, and other constant-growth content. These are stored on DFS share(s).

What's been your experience? @Eric Shafer, does the above match your experiences or preferences?

In the current release of the installer, you need to (and can make) direct MSI calls. We have documentation planned that should be available soon.

Later this year, we're also going to release two more options:

  • CLI (Command line interface) support
  • Central config file support

The central config file passes a couple optional settings through to each application. In the current release, it supports custom service users. In an upcoming release, it will support a custom drive location for all applications that themselves support it (most but not all).

From the upcoming docs:

You can manually install individual Laserfiche application packages using the msiexec.exe command line utility. See Microsoft's documentation on available command line options and Windows Installer properties

Use the Download applications option in the Laserfiche Installer to download specific installation packages. The packages are downloaded as self-extracting executables with the relevant .msi file.

The following examples demonstrate some common use cases.

Install a package to a specific installation location and show the basic user interface:

msiexec /i "C:\sampledownloadfolder\samplepackagename.msi" /qb TARGETDIR="C:\samplefoldername"

Hi Brianna,

Thanks for you reply. I wish I had kept the command I used, nor do remember which module it for, but it didn't work with INSTALLDIR or TARGETDIR. I wonder if it doesn't work for all modules yet, or something else was wrong with my string.

This one worked:

msiexec /i "C:\Users\lfadmin\Downloads\LF Installs\WindowsClient\WindowsClient-x64.msi" INSTALLDIR="c:\lf\dt" /qb

P.S. I've not heard the acronym CLI used since my Amiga days. :)
