Question

Will the Advanced Metadata Ever Be Available in Snapshot?

asked two days ago

I know the Advanced Metadata functionality that was added with version 12 is not planned to ever be made available in the Windows Client, only the Web Client.  And I understand that is because it is browser based and relies on the Web Client's functionality.

But I'm wondering if it is planned to be included in Snapshot in the future - perhaps by opening up a Web Client window to dictate the fields - is that planned for future updates?

Thank you!

Thanks for the context! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new updates. It's a fair amount of work to port over the changes to non-web applications (as you've noticed), so this is a good example to look to in the future if we're able to look into expanding it more. So, no plans at the moment, but always appreciate these examples.

Not necessarily something that is currently planned, can you provide a bit more context of where it's coming up for you with Snapshot? Thanks!

I've only recently started to implement the Advanced Metadata because I was having an error with it prior to the 2025H2 release, so it is brand new for our team.  And new things are exciting.

We have a template that we have used for about 15 years for kind of a central processing functionality.  It can handle dozens of different types of documents and based on the metadata that is populated the items are routed to the correct location by Workflow.  There are some fields that we only need for some of those types of documents, so they have always been optional, and if they were missing when workflow needed them, they were rejected and labeled with an error message in the metadata.  That works, but staff have requested a bunch of times over the years to have the system automatically mark the items as required or optional based on the type of document.  That wasn't possible until now.

Naturally, that was the very first thing I implemented with the Advanced Metadata, making these fields show as required when the document type needs it.  I was using this as an excuse to push our staff towards using the Web Client more than the Windows Client.  But the part I couldn't avoid was all the staff asking "what about snapshot?"  I didn't have a good answer for them.

I understand why it isn't planned for the Windows Client, and figured Snapshot was subject to much of the same limitations - at least in the current functionality of a stand-alone pop-up window.  But I was wondering if it would be possible to tell Snapshot to pop-up within the Web Client instead of the stand-along pop-up window, maybe as a configurable option which way to do it.  That way, Snapshot could leverage the new functionality.
