Did Windows service pack KB5051989 break Snapshot?

We have a situation where Snapshot will print from Chrome but not Edge or Notepad, which is as plain jane as it comes.  This is consistent across many users running on different AVD environments.

 

The environment is complex:  Azure Virtual Desktop 23H2 hosting the Windows 11 Enterprise Multisession OS, but that should not be an excuse!

 

Is there anyone else having this issue?

This is most likely a known MSIX compatibility issue with the version of the 3rd party Black Ice print driver used by currently released versions of Snapshot. The upcoming Snapshot 12 release includes an updated version of this driver that resolves the issue. The Laserfiche 12 Spring 2025 release is scheduled for April 7, 2025.

The bug is logged as # 378064 - Snapshot fails to store into the repository when printing from the built in Notepad application in Windows 11 (note that this affects Windows 11 MSIX applications generally, see below).

The driver update is logged as # 553099 - [Snapshot] Update Blackice driver.

  • Fixed issues where Windows 11 MSIX applications and some more advanced features in the Printer Driver were not working. Windows 11 comes with new MSIX package applications such as Notepad and Paint that are executed in an isolated “sandbox.” This had previously created problems when using some of the features of the black ice printer such as Start Application", "Save As", or uploading to Database, FTP, HTTPS, ... , and SharePoint. This has all been resolved in the latest release.

I believe I am seeing this across different versions of Snapshot. Currently working with a customer on 10.4.3 that cannot use snapshot with notepad or ms paint. Same situation here? Windows 11 environment

Yep. If it's Notepad and Paint, same issue, same fix.

Will Snapshot 12 work with older versions of Laserfiche? or is there another way to get this corrected? It does not appear older versions of Snapshot were updated.

Hi Nolen,

Using a higher version client application (including Snapshot) with a lower version Laserfiche (Repository) Server is not officially supported, except where specifically noted. This isn't one of those exceptions.

Older versions of Snapshot were not updated with the newer Black Ice driver, and I'm not aware of any current plans to backport that change to 10/11.

You will need to upgrade the system to version 12. At minimum Laserfiche Repository Server. There are many, many good reasons to upgrade to Laserfiche 12, and with all the additional features and fixes in the 2025 H1 release, we recommend starting to plan that upgrade if you haven't already.
