Question

Upgraded Web Client to v12 early - oops!

asked on February 18

I've been upgrading my development servers from LF11 to LF12. While working on Web Client I seem to have mistakenly logged into my primary production server and upgraded Web Client. The Repository is still on v11. So far everything looks okay, but should I consider downgrading back to v11 until I'm ready for the production upgrades? I'm definitely not ready to upgrade the production repo just yet.

Thank you!

It's probably fine. Just don't try to use the new metadata designer. That specific feature requires Laserfiche Repository Server 12. Repository Web Client 12 may handle trying to use the new metadata designer with Laserfiche Server 11 gracefully, or it may not.

Edit: Tested it out and it's handled gracefully. Nothing crashes or fails in a detrimental way. That was our main area of concern, so unless you run into some other issue, I don't see any reason to downgrade back to 11.

Edit 2: We don't recommend anyone else do this. You're not supposed to be able to connect higher version client applications to lower version server applications. There's normally an explicit check for this, which is either missing in Repository Web Client 12 or wasn't implemented correctly. We'll be fixing that in the next release. Repository Web Client 12 is working with Laserfiche Server 11 coincidentally, not deliberately.

Thank you for your response and testing further in your environment! I had time in the evening after posting, so I went ahead and downgraded just to be safe. It's going to be at least a couple weeks before I'm ready to upgrade the production systems and didn't want to risk anything not working properly for the users.

Happy to help test your products and find something that didn't work as intended for you! laugh

If everything is still working, there is no need to downgrade. Each component is supposed to be fully backwards compatible with v11.

Note for readers - the compatibility direction is "lower version clients can (generally) work with higher version servers".

I.e., Import Agent 11 works with Laserfiche Repository Server 12. All Laserfiche 11 applications work with Laserfiche Directory Server 12.

There aren't guarantees in the other direction unless explicitly noted.

See: Is Laserfiche 12 backwards compatible - Laserfiche Answers for a recommended upgrade order.
