Question

Question

What is wrong with my search syntax here?

asked on October 18, 2024 Show version history
({[Job Request Submission]:[Job Commitment]="DBE"} || {[Job Request Submission]:[Job Commitment]="DVBE"})&{LF:LOOKIN="\10 Job Files"}

All I added was the or statement and grouped the 2 fields I am searching by with parenthesis. I can not find any search syntax related documentation in the help files or on support.laserfiche.com

Does syntax use some alternative symbol for or? I tried both | and || which is pretty standardized for an or character given the ampersand means and

I figure it is usually either the words AND and OR or && and ||

"OR" is a single pipe ("|") instead of a double one. Docs for version 11 here and cloud here.

When I accessed the online documentation from the Workflow designer it brought me here

https://doc.laserfiche.com/laserfiche.documentation/11/administration

Which does not seem to cover any search syntax and includes different main categories. It does cover all the token syntax and the formatting syntax but is missing search syntax stuff.

The link where the syntax documentation is has a slightly different uri

https://doc.laserfiche.com/laserfiche.documentation/11/userguide

And different main categories

I was wondering why nothing was coming up when searching for help on the syntax.

I just tried the single pipe again and it worked, I guess when I tried it before I had something else in my syntax that was incorrect. I was also almost sure OR was 2 pipes.

Yeah, I see what you mean, it's linked from the Workflow Designer help, but really buried. It's this "more information" link in one of the pages about Search Repository's properties. We'll make it better.

Chad, I always use the search syntax whitepaper as a reference. I've attached it here. It says 10.3 but as far as I'm aware all the information within is still valid for current versions.

Oh nice - thank you @████████ !
@████████ - that is the document I was referring to in my comment, but couldn't get the support site to pull up that day.

The only issue I see with the syntax is the OR is a single | not the ||.

I copied your syntax into my Windows Client, changes the template names and field names to something in my system, edited the values to ones I know in my system, changed the || to |, and then changed the folder path to one in my system - and then the search worked and returned results.

There is a document you can find on support.laserfiche.com called "Advanced Search Syntax 10.3" that has a very deep dive into advanced search syntax.  I can't get it to search the site right now, it just loads indefinitely, I don't know why - but I've referred to that document a lot.  This post has an explanation why the document is labeled as 10.3 and not updated for version 11.

EDIT TO ADD: Miruna is just too fast wink - I was halfway through writing this when she replied.

Miruna's link below was what I was looking for to confirm my syntax was right, I just couldn't find it anywhere through conventional searching, but only because it was taking me to a different docs site and nothing was coming up on support.

@████████and everybody else, give our new AI search a spin, let us know how it does compared to conventional search: Search User Guide with Laserfiche AI

This is exactly what we needed! Except I hope to get it hooked up to the entire documentation library rather than just the user guide.

For example it could not answer these questions very well even though there is clear documentation on it if we search long enough to find it.

It will. We are moving towards having all that information in the documentation rather than scattered white papers on the support site.

This will be huge, it has more recently been harder to find documents I used to find easily just because there is more and more features and documentation in the total index.
