The Retrieve Business Process Variables activity in Workflow can only retrieve 20 fields at one time according to the below message. This message does not present itself until you try to publish the workflow though. Can this be caught when validating the workflow?

Retrieve Business Process Variables activity can retrieve at most 20 collection or table fields at one time. This is by design. Bug 549733 has been created to validate the collection/table fields number check in validation step, instead of publish step.

For troubleshooting this issue, it would also be nice if it specified the name of the activity that has the issue.

To take this to the next level, it would be nice to have an easy way to know how many fields are being retrieved in each Retrieve Business Variables activity. It is pretty frustrating when you have been configuring everything and you don't know there is a problem until you validate.

For this I was thinking if when you are in the dialog to select fields if there was a counter at the bottom that told you how many have been selected. It's hard to know since if you have multiple forms, it selects the field for every form it belongs to. And now that I'm thinking about it, why not just add a message for when a user selects more than 20 while they are in the dialog instead of waiting for them to click the Validate button?

Juan, is there a bug filed for this as seen also in other thread(also Blake!) on my comments? https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/197900/Only-20-collection-or-table-fields-can-be-retrieved-at-one-time-0719WF1-0411WF0#200126 this is a very long standing bug where if you have multiple forms selected, it counts the collection/table fields once per form when counting this for validation.

Thanks John. You mean that if the fields in different forms using the same variable, these fields will be count multiple times?

Juan, correct. This is able to be reproduced easily.

Make a table with 11 fields. Copy the form.
In workflow, select all fields from both forms(this automatically happens often if you go back to add fields at a later time).
Attempt to publish your workflow.

Hi John, thank you for the detailed steps. Bug 550952 (should calculate form field count correctly when Retrieve Business Process Variables from Forms with the same variables used in multiple forms) has been filed.
