Snapshot error code translation

posted on July 22

I am getting an error in snapshot which just provides a number, 16. How do I translate?

This "Internal error: 16" appears to come from a 3rd party virtual printer driver component that Snapshot uses. I found exactly one hit for it in our internal support case database, from 2006. We asked the 3rd party driver provider (Black Ice) what it meant, and they replied:

"Hi,
Internal Error 16 refers to being unable to save a file in JPEG format.
Unable to save a file could be a lack of disk space, no permissions to save in the output directory, etc. You should check your settings for output first."

We passed at along with a note of "we recommend to uninstall and reinstall Snapshot, and make sure that you have the options "current user configuration" and "shared printer" selected. Also check the settings in both cases.
Please let us know if that works for you."

Again, this is from 2006. Laserfiche support case ID #69470 for reference. The "Internal error: 16" is maybe the same as back then but as it's from a 3rd party component I couldn't say for sure. The current Black Ice Printer Driver documentation that I think applies says:

"16 - Error while uploading the document to the database. Error: [Error Details] - An error occurred while uploading a document. This can occur if there was a problem getting the document information received from the Printer Driver."

If the error isn't transient, try fully ,un-installing and re-installing Snapshot (clear out registry entries, ProgramData directory, anything left in Program Files (x86) etc. as applicable). If that doesn't solve the issue, open a support case. There only being a single reported case of this to us in the last 20 years suggests that it's extremely rare.

If I try to test myself directly from the server the driver is shared from, I get this error

I don't think Terminal Services is a role any longer. Where is this role?

Terminal Services was renamed to Remote Desktop Services ages ago. See: Microsoft - Terminal Services has been renamed

The text of that error message appears to have not been updated.

It says (not installed) under Remote Desktop Services though

Because of the nature of printer drivers, you have to make sure it's installed based on the machine calling it, not the machine it's installed on. For example, if you have Snapshot installed as a print server on a Windows Server OS, but are calling into it from Windows Client OS machines, you have to actually force it to act as a Client printer driver. I'm not sure that's your specific issue with this error code but... it's a not-uncommon Snapshot weirdness, so figured I'd toss it out, in case that's the scenario. See Installing Snapshot (laserfiche.com) and the FORCENT parameter in Unattended Installation Properties (laserfiche.com) for more information if this is indeed your setup here.
