Question

VMware Paravirtual SCSI support?

asked on July 15, 2024

Can a customer use VMware paravirtual SCSI controllers for the OS and application/data drives? I would assume so, but I don't see any definite answer anywhere.

Hi Jesse,

This is a Windows and VMware question, not a Laserfiche one. Laserfiche applications make file system calls through the Windows operating system. The block or file storage protocol(s) that Windows uses to access the underlying storage is transparent to Laserfiche.  All we can speak to is that Laserfiche makes file system calls to Windows correctly.

Laserfiche cannot "confirm" support because support here is between the hypervisor and operating system, and we can't speak for VMware/Broadcom or Microsoft.

Here is the VMware / Broadcom documentation link that describes the requirements for this storage controller:

Configuring disks to use VMware Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) controllers

The only two that stood out to me were:

  • PVSCSI adapters are not suitable for DAS environments.

If a customer's IT folks are asking, they likely already know this and do not have a DAS environment.

  • Windows or Linux guest operating system that is published as support on VMware Compatibility Guide (VCG) showing that PVSCSI is a supported feature the combination of OS release and ESXi release.

Any version of Windows Server supported by Microsoft is realistically going to be supported by VMware/Broadcom on any supported version of ESXi.

Here's a quick VCG search for all versions of ESXi and Windows Server with VMware Paravirtual storage controllers. Note that while I didn't expand out Windows Server 2016 and 2012 R2, they're supported back through ESXi 6.5 just like Server 2019.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,
Sam
