Question

Making new Web Client Connections under the same Machine Tag

asked on May 29, 2023

In the admin console, a user logging in from multiple browsers or devices would show a different MachineTag for each connection. Even Edge and Chrome on the same machine register as a different tag. Even using the chrome feature to open multiple instances of the same browser to make multiple connections registers as a new MachineTag.

We have a situation where a user is logging in with multiple connections, but from the same MachineTag every time, which implies same machine, same browser, new tabs only.

How are they able to do this? When I login from the same browser using a new tab, it does not register a new connection.

It seems to me like it should only be possible to use up one connection per MachineTag.

You might be running into this bug we recently fixed:

  • Resolved a potential issue where Web Client 11 could cause duplicate sessions to be created. (418112)

There was an extensive thread about it here:

Thank you, looks like using an iFrame might be what allows this to happen.

Looking forward to an 11.1 package that includes many of the patches floating around out there.

In build (11.0.2401.9) it is still allowing users to make multiple connections from the same machine tag. The users do not know what they are doing different either, they say they are using a single browser, no iFrames, no incognito.

We were never able to resolve this issue in our environment.

Do you know how they are doing it though? They are not aware of doing anything different but it does not happen to us, even if we try from their workstation. It just keeps re-establishing the same connection.

Nope. That's part of the issue is we have been unable to replicate the issue on demand.

Are all the environments where you see it happen using DS Authentication?

Interesting, in our case the environment is DS Auth as well.
