Laserfiche Rio 10.4.2 - Imported PDFs missing data

asked on January 24, 2023

Hi all,

My business has had a long running issue with importing certain invoices (pdfs) from some suppliers.

The PDFs import without any error but when opened within the Laserfiche client are missing detail.

Here is an example:

We are importing the files and generating laserfiche pages.

The suppliers/pdfs we seem to be having issue with are generated from Quickbooks.

Thanks for any guidance and help.

Just a guess here.

Since it sounds like it only happens with certain PDFs from certain sources, I wonder if it is possible that the PDFs are set-up as InDesign version of PDF instead of Acrobat version?  Indesign adds a lot of extra functionality to PDFs, but it could be screwing with how Laserfiche processes them.  I haven't encountered this myself within Laserfiche, but I have with multiple other applications, where they just couldn't do processes that they can do with other PDF documents.  If you open the PDF in Acrobat or Reader, go to File > Properties > Description > Application, it might indicate if the application is set-up for InDesign.  Also, as you work with the PDF, if the fields on the PDF ever re-arrange or make major changes like adding pages, it's a good bet that it is set-up for InDesign.

If this is the case, you might want to try to run the document in Laserfiche without page generation and using Acrobat or Reader as the viewer instead of the Laserfiche Viewer.

Again, this is just a guess, as I haven't personally seen this behavior within Laserfiche, but have with some other software.

Good luck!  I hope you find a solution!

Looks like the issue may lie with documents that have PDF Producer as Skia/PDF m83....

Saw a similar report here https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/190907/PDF-Body-Missing-When-Imported-into-Laserfiche

although we don't use the Import Agent.

How are you importing the PDFs?  Are you using QuickFields?  Because that other post indicated an issue with both Import Agent and QuickFields.  Upgrading to 11 sounds like the solution for both.

Thank you Matthew. I am going to give a basic answer here as I've not heard of Import Agent OR QuickFields.

We are using the LF 10.2 desktop client and the files are just being dragged and dropped in, either from the users desktop or from an email.

It looks like Import Agent and QuickFields aren't a product we use/have.

You're on 10.2 of the client?

Am I correct in understanding from the title of your original post that your server is running 10.4.2?

If so, my next recommendation would be to upgrade the client to at least 10.4 on a workstation to test if that resolves the issue.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, or I've misunderstood the versions you are on, then you might want to ask your Solution Provider to open a ticket with Laserfiche.  The only places I could find Skia mentioned in LFAnswers or LFSupport were this post, the one you linked, and a list of changes to Import Agent with version 10.4.0 Update 3.  Since we're only finding mentions of Skia related to QuickFields and Import Agent, and you are using the client, I'm out of ideas.

By the way - If you are curious about Import Agent and Quick Fields, they are worth checking out.  Since you mentioned Rio, you may actually have licenses to them - I'm not an expert on the licensing, but I was under the impression that Rio included most everything.
Import Agent is a utility that runs in the background (usually on a server) and automatically imports documents into the repository.  It can monitor folders for changes and import the documents automatically.  I'm running hundreds of documents from multiple sources through it every day.  I believe it can also import emails (I'm not using that part).
I haven't actually used QuickFields myself, but as I understand it, it is a tool for scanning documents at the user level, where you set-up profiles for various documents that you see regularly, and it will automatically generate the metadata based on the OCR'd structure of the scanned document.

Thanks Matthew, I made a mistake - our client version is 10.4 as well.

Darn.  In that case, I have no more suggestions beyond asking your Solution Provider to open a ticket with Laserfiche.  I wish you the best of luck!

There have been several releases since the version you are currently on, a lot of which address PDF display issues. Have you spoken with your Solution Provider about possibly upgrading your system?

We upgraded to Laserfiche 11 and that resolved the issue.

:)

Thanks for all the help with this! Simple fix.
