Question

Forms Authenticated Participant to LFDS Migration [Asking clarification]

asked on August 25, 2022

Hi all,

We have customer who is going to migrate Forms Authenticated Participant user & Full Named user to LFDS.

They are not using AD or LDAP. All users created inside Laserfiche and no plan on using AD or LDAP after migration.

At the moment, they register Forms Authenticated Participant users in form. While for Named Users, they register in Admin Console then sync to forms.

We already migrated Full Named users into LFDS, but the Forms still authenticate from Repository. We planning on doing the shift from Repository authentication to LFDS.

Question is,

1.  After the shift, will Full Named user that was migrated to LFDS will have same SID (basically same task assignment, same identity)

2. How about Forms Authenticated Participant users? Does it migrated as well? If it does, when this happened at which step?

I've been reading the migration tools manuals and the LF documentation on these users but it gets confusing.

I hope you can help clarify the steps. Appreciate the help.

1. The short answer is that it depends. If you use the Account Migration tools then yes, the full named user accounts will retain their associations. If you manually created the accounts in LFDS without running the migration tools, then no.

2. The Forms authenticated users will be migrated to LFDS when you go to switch Forms to use LFDS authentication instead of Laserfiche Server authentication. In the interface there will be a message that pops up similar to this one:

I hope that helps.

Have you ever successfully used this feature to migrate participant users? We tried it and it turned into a real rabbit hole making me wonder if we are the first to ever attempt it.

Yes, I've done it several times.

Did you ever get an error that a user with the same name already exists in Directory Server even when that is not the case?

Did you check the logs to see if it mentions which account it is having an issue with?

Every single user, there is an event viewer log for each user like this

A user with the name jthompson already exists

A user with the name amurphy already exists

A user with the name bgarcia already exists

etc etc

Those are just made up names, but you get the idea

Laserfiche is already working on a fix and they created a custom build for us that should be deployed this week but since it requires a custom build to fix I was thinking we might be the first to ever try using it.

Sounds like there is no automatic way to do it.

Forms 10 can migrate existing participant user information from the Forms database into Directory Server 10.

There is no automated migration path for migrating Laserfiche repository named users from Forms to Directory Server 10. Existing Laserfiche repository named users will not be automatically matched with any newly created Directory Server 10 Laserfiche users. Be aware that the migration to Directory Server 10 can affect existing running process instances, because pending tasks assigned to these user types may be lost after the migration to Directory Server 10 authentication. Any processes configured to use repository user accounts and groups must be manually reconfigured. Similarly, there is no current support for migrating Laserfiche repository groups to Directory Server 10.

Please back up all appropriate databases prior to switching an existing Forms installation from Laserfiche Server authentication to Directory Server authentication as the process is not reversible.

This post mentions using LDAP to maintain the connection to their Forms Participant account, but I'm not familiar enough to comment on that.

This is specific to version 10.3 and lower -- that KB is from 2015. 10.4 and higher support migration. I will request that the KB be updated to link to https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014036/laserfiche-account-migration-tool, the KB that talks about current support for the migration.

Hi Mohd, unfortunately I can't answer your question but my group has a similar need to migrate users and I'm looking for documentation.  You mentioned migration tools manuals -- where can those be found?

Thank you,

Kristi Abuissa
