Answers Site - Enhancement Idea - Vote for Correct Answer

posted on June 30, 2022

I know users can mark their own posts as answered, and Laserfiche can mark them as answered.  But a lot of questions remain unanswered (even if they are answered and just were never marked).  It would be great if there was a way for community members to vote for the correct answer, and mark it an answered if it has enough votes, or perhaps based on the repuation or achievements of the users voting for the answer (kind of "trusting" those users to know what they are talking about).  Maybe the ability to vote would be locked behind a minimum reputation level like the ability to edit categories is.

Alternate to requiring a minimum number of votes - maybe it could just wait for a set amount of time (like 7 or 10 days) without the original poster selecting an answer before it defaults to the voted answer.

I think functionality like this would help resolve the issue of questions that are answered but never get marked that way.

I love this idea and the enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, it and other significant Answers enhancements that require software development are unlikely to ever be implemented. Answers is based on the Laserfiche Discussions module which goes End of Life in a few months. Any software changes to Answers here on out are likely to be of the "critical security/bug fix" nature.

Please continue to suggest ideas to make Answers better that could plausibly be implemented through configuration changes though!

Bummer!

Disappointing to know that whatever Answers is, will be all that it is.  For the sake of the growth of this community, I hope Laserfiche is researching a new platform to host Answers.

No kidding.  This site has been so important for me on my journey over the years, and I try really hard to pay that forward by contributing to the site to help others where I can.  There's a really dedicated community on this site, and I hope it isn't allowed to just fade into obscurity. sad

Whoa...I hope there will be a new iteration of Answers as it is a lifeline for VAR's and Customers alike....

I want to clarify that the Discussions EoL absolutely does not mean we're abandoning Answers or have any intention of letting it "fade in obscurity". It just means that there's no longer a Dev team that covers the Discussions software module, and by extension Answers, so there's no one to direct these types of feature requests to for implementation.

We'll always have a technical forum for this community, even if we eventually re-platform Answers to a different service. My understanding is that if we change platforms in the future we'll make every effort to migrate the content here to the new platform. I'll be damned if we don't figure out how to migrate everyone's Reputation scores over as well ;)

At minimum, we'll keep this iteration of Answers up as a searchable read-only archive. The nearly decade worth of contributions from everyone in the community here are invaluable and irreplaceable. I sincerely hope that none of us feel like our contributions to this forum are at all devalued on account of Laserfiche being unable to add new features to the current underlying software platform.

I know many of us "pay it forward" (as Matthew said) by going above and beyond in our posts and replies for the benefit of unknown future readers. It's certainly something I strive to do myself and fully intend on continuing. I hope you all do as well =)
