Question

large pdfs when importing

asked on April 3, 2022

Hello :)

We have noticed recently that when scanning a document into our repository, the document scans in very large - not necessarily file size but the image is very big. We can tell the difference when we combine one PDF from an external source with one that we have scanned in (see image below). I have gone through the generate pages settings, import setting and 'new document' settings and tested with each change  but it has not resolved.

I note that when we scan a file, it goes to a monitored folder and is then imported to laserfiche. If I pause the import agent and grab the file before it is filed into laserfiche, the document works perfectly, so I am led to believe there is a setting in the importing, rather than the scanning element of the workflow that is causing this.

Has anyone come across this?

Thank you

Is Import Agent converting the PDFs to TIFF? If so, check the DPI settings. Sometimes, variations in the original DPI versus the DPI of the converted pages can cause things like this.

Also, even if the original looks fine at first glance, I would suggest checking the properties because we've had a lot of people send PDFs that are actually 17x22 instead of 8.5x11 because of DPI.

It all comes down to the DPI and the image dimensions since size in "inches" is a product of the pixel width/height divided by the DPI.

For example, at 300 DPI your image should be 2550x3000 pixels, but we've seen pages that were more like 5000x6000 if the source PDF was created with unexpected size/dpi settings.
