Software Update vs Build Terminology

posted on March 5, 2022

What is the difference between a new build and a new update to the software? The build has always been seperated by a . character after the software version. IE: 11.x where multiple . characters indicate specific sub builds, IE: 11.x.x

There are Update numbers now too though. What is an Update x vs a Build x

There is no indication of what update you are on when looking at the software version. For example, after installing Update 2 for Forms, it still just shows the standard Build notation. Is the first character of all sub build numbers the update number?

Another fun example. Looking at something in the help file today for LFDS STS and the help files talk about the differences in update number (which is normal). But LFDS doesn't actually show me that.

It would also be beneficial to have a table of version numbers for each LF module.  Similar to how https://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/  shows SQL server release version as determined from the RTM numeric identifier (typically shown in MSSQL Studio).

I agree with Chad here. It would be very useful if the About dialogue included an update number.

I would like one string you can copy and compare when checking versions between systems

IE: #.#U#.#.# / 11.0U0.1234.5678

The Update number(1, 2 etc) is not used in the build number, we use Update 1, Update 2 just for naming the release notes. For the build number, the "2201" stands for year 2022 month January and "20436" is an internal version counter which will increase every time we make a new build.

What confuse you regard of the Update and Build number?

Ah so this means the build number does change with each update?

It is a little difficult to compare versions.

For example I see an Update 2 is the lastet version and I want to make sure they are using Update 2, but it doesn't say anywhere in the product if they are.

In the past there were only builds, for example 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 10.4.5 If I saw the latest version was 10.4.5 I could check the about screen and see if I was working in 10.4.5

Our About dialogs have always displayed the full build number as MajorVersion.MinorVersion.PatchVersion.BuildNumber. We've used Major.Minor versions as shorthand for a given release.

As of version 11 were are de-emphasizing the minor versions from our user interfaces. The About dialog will still show the full build number.

The KB article for each update (whether in version 10 or 11) will always indicate the full version of the files involved, so you can still check whether you're on the latest version or not or whether something worked in a previous version.

Having troulbe finding it, on this update for example

https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014352/list-of-changes-for-laserfiche-forms-11-update-2

Ideally it would be on the main product page, found from the downloads site, since this is what we might be looking at when comparing our existing version with what is currently available

Below is the main product page, to get to the KB article from here I clicked on relase notes, then KB article

https://support.laserfiche.com/download/4167/laserfiche-forms-11-update-2

Thanks for your advices. We have updated the release notes and list of changes articles to include the build number of the Forms 11 Update 2 release in the summary for future reference.

Well for starters when you release hotfixes, you say things like:

Note: This hotfix is specific to Laserfiche Forms 11 Update 3 Hotfix 1014419 (11.0.2212.30987), and should not be installed over a Laserfiche Forms 11.0, 11 Update 1, or 11 Update 2 installation.

So naturally we try to reconcile this with our version number like 11.0.2108.10347

^
If I walk back using dates, I could say that this is either Update 0 or Update 1. So do I install each patch before the last? Install 1, 2 then the patch?

I would appreciate if the "about" page of Forms provided the update number along with a link that takes you to the server history of updates and hotfixes.

Just commenting in hopes it raises visibility.  I also would like to have a chart listing each application's various major/minor/hotfix build numbers.  It would be particularly helpful when there is a prerequisite/prohibitive condition for a hotfix or patch.  Bonus points if the chart links out to the release notes/downloads for the given patch or installation.

Please consider doing this - it would be very helpful.

Helpful and low friction.
