Creating migration test environment with Rio 10.4 to upgrade production United 8.3

posted on September 30, 2021 Show version history

I am currently upgrading a Laserfiche server 8.3 and would like to set up a separate 10.4.x test environment to include LFDS/LF Server/Workflow..etc on new equipment and do a test migration from 8.3 while leaving the current production environment untouched. Once testing is completed I would migrate the test environment to production and remove the current production system with the old united licensing(pre license manager 8).

We have several Quickfield systems(7.1.2), along with some workflow and barcode scanning system and if it goes down it would cause a major issue.

Is it possible to setup LFDS(to control new prod and test environment), LF Server 10.4..etc (test environment), and leave the current production system intact while I do the test migration without any major issues or licensing headaches? What licensing would be required for the test environment outside of the current/new Production licenses?

Our records indicate that you are licensed for Rio, which will allow you to stand up as many servers as you need. The Forms portal license is limited to one instance and the master license can only be activated once. If you need to have a fully independent copy of LFDS in your test environment, your reseller can help you get a temporary license.

Please remember that Workflow and Forms are not static, so if you copy their databases from Production to your Test environment, you may have duplicate processes running.

Miruna,

Thank you for the response. We are licensed for Rio and we are now starting the upgrade process and want to stand up a DEV/TEST first before touching our Prod environment, and will stand up only one LFDS to control all environments since they are all virtual machines.

Once LFDS is stood up, can we standup the Dev/Test environment with 10.4 and migrate our databases over, complete our testing and then decom our current production, or do we need to join our current production to LFDS right away and then stand up Dev/Test?

Due to the older version of Quickfields (7.1.3) I am concerned we may cause issues in our current production environment if it is joined to LFDS right away. Thoughts?

Your master license only gets one activation. If you are in Rio, that's currently in use in ...License Manager 8? So you would either have to deactivate that or request a temporary one for LFDS. Deactivating the master license will affect your Prod environment.

As far as Quick Fields 7 goes, it doesn't know anything about LFDS (or License Manager), so that is not going to be affected. What would affect it would be changes in the location or the Laserfiche Server or repository name (which would require updates to each session's document classes). There is also a migration utility for converting existing sessions to a format compatible with newer versions of Quick Fields. See more here.
