Question

Where does Creation Date in Laserfiche Client get its time from?

asked on October 22, 2020

I understand that Creation Date is held as UTC date/time and the actual display in Laserfiche client is adjusted to show the local time.

We have some users on local installations on their laptops and some using virtual desktop. The virtual desktop users are seeing the time displayed for Creation Date as one hour behind the other users (the laptop users' time is correct, the VD users is wrong). We've checked the time zone/regional settings and device time for the VD users and they all look correct. The Laserfiche server and the SQL server times also seem to be correct.

Any suggestions as to where the wrong time is coming from?

The LF client detects the system time zone (with ICU) and uses that to convert UTC timestamps to local time. The one-hour difference suggests it could be a DST miscalculation. What time zone is the client in?

We're in London - so currently BST, next week it will be GMT. I'll have to look up what ICU and DST mean! I'm about to log off and am away until Tuesday, but I'll check here again then. Thanks for your reply.

ICU is software that handles the time zone details. DST is "Daylight Savings Time". There is a decent chance the times will be correct once BST ends. Do you have the time set to automatically adjust for daylight savings? Like this:

We're having this same issue every year on a client since DST was cancelled here in Brazil (back then they were using LF 9.2.1, now they are on LF 10.4. The Windows server's time is correct, but on Laserfiche the creation date is one hour ahead of the actual time (and the server's time). Ex. Now its 09:10h, the server shows the correct time, but when we create any item on Laserfiche Client its Creation Date shows 10:10h.

There is another topic showing this issue back to 2018 - https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/149450/Incorrect-creation-time-of-files

A way to "solve" this is changing the server timezone from "UTC -3 Brasilia" to "(UTC-03:00) Salvador".

Does anyone knows how to solve this once and for all?

This is an known issue due to the version of the 3rd party software we are using not being aware of the daylight savings changes in Brazil. A patch for version 11 will be available next month.

Thank you very much for the information, Miruna.

We are having the same issue at our organization for 2 users, others see the creation date accurately. We have checked all the time zone and region settings we can think of and they are correct, but the creation date when using the Client app (ver 10.4) is +6 hours. We are in CST time, so it's not a daylight savings issue. It seems to be using GMT time. No other apps on these users' computers seem to have the same problem.
We have work flows add the time stamp to the file names, and that is displayed correctly. Any suggestions? Removing and reinstalling the application did not resolve the issue.

It turns out in this case the fix was to remove the user's Attributes in the LF Admin console. I haven't found any tech doc that describes that as the fix, but it did work in this user's case. Agin the specific issue was the creation/modify time was exactly +6 hours (so it seemed to be using GMT) and not respecting the time zone set by Windows.
