Question

Opening emails directly from Web Client

asked on January 9, 2020

Hi,

When comparing Windows Client to Web Client there is what seems a functional flaw with emails.

If you have an email (msg) stored in the repository and use Web Client, the process to open it in order to forward/reply is a little clunky. It is necessary to first download the email to a temporary location and then open the email from there. Only then do you get the usual email functionality afforded through Outlook etc.

The email/document preview is a nice feature (notably lacking from the Windows Client) but doesn't quite go as far as allowing a user to seamlessly reply or forward an email, or give an option to open the email directly. For client with large volumes of emails this can be frustrating.

Is there a technical limitation that determines this behaviour, or any viable workaround? Most of my testing in with Chrome but I don't see any difference with IE either.

Thanks,

Nigel.

The purpose of Laserfiche is not to act as an email client, but a repository for record keeping. The reason you are able to reply to an email when using the Windows Client is because it opens using your default email program, where as the web client is defaulting to open within the web client instead.

Within the web client you can change it to always download electronic files in the users options. This would download it using the browser and then the end user would need to click the file to open it and it will open in the computers default email program.

We're not expecting Web Client to have the functionality of an email client, just to behave the same as the Windows Client in respect of emails, or at least make the opening process more seamless.

The handling of Word/Excel documents is better in that you get the "Edit With" button but that's still an extra step in comparison to the Windows Client. The customer expectation is that double clicking an email will open it directly in their email client.

Understandable. By changing the web client option that I mentioned in my first post, that will be similar to how the Windows Client works by automatically downloading it, but they will still need to click to open it after it downloads. Depending on the browser they are using, there might be a browser option that can be changed to automatically open downloaded files.

Just as an FYI on this thread, you experience the same behaviour in SharePoint, so this issue isn't specific to Laserfiche.
