Question

Upgrading from United to Rio

asked on August 8, 2019

We are upgrading from United to Rio.

We currently have the following:

  • United licensing model
  • Running Laserfiche Server 10.3.1 (installed from the Avante install package)  on a vm server that's also running Import Agent
  • Laserfiche SQL database on a dedicated vm server
  • Laserfiche Forms (on a dedicated internal vm web server)
  • WebLink (on a vm web server that is public, in our DMZ)
  • Workflow (on a dedicated vm server, but shared with other smaller internal websites)
  • 1 user running Quick Fields
  • Approximately 250 repository users, all running Laserfiche client versions 8.2.1 or 10.3

Assumptions:

  1. I'll need to recreate all Laserfiche groups and users. So, we created an AD security group for our largest Laserfiche group. I exported the list of groups (in Admin Console) to an XML file and exported the list of users to a CSV file, both of which I'll refer to when manually recreating the groups.
  2. I can install LFDS, Forms, Web Client, and WebLink on the same internal vm web server.

I have a few questions before upgrading:

  1. After activating our Rio licenses, will the repository users be able to access the repository using their existing client software?
  2. I’ll be installing Directory Server (from the Laserfiche Rio 10.3.1 package) on a new server. Will I need to install the Rio version of Laserfiche Server on our repository server?
  3. Can I just install over the existing 10.3.1 Avante version? Or do I need to uninstall Laserfiche 10.3.1 (Avante) and then install Laserfiche 10.3.1 (Rio)?
  4. Is it better to install 10.3.1 Rio (matching the Avante version we currently have), or should I install the newer 10.4 Rio version?

I will be saving snapshots of our Laserfiche servers, in case I need to roll back. I have read the white paper "Laserfiche Rio 10.3: Deployment Guide".

It's not required that you move your repository users out to LFDS or Active Directory users when converting to Rio/Avante and the use of Directory Server. If you do decide to move them from the repository to Laserfiche users in the directory server, there is a migration tool that will preserve their repository rights, group membership and security.

Hi Mandi,

I'll do my best to answer your questions in a similar bullet-ed format so it's easier to read. smiley

Assumptions:

  1. You are correct as you'll be transitioning from repository users to LFDS/ Windows AD users. The benefit to this however, is that LFDS/AD users only use 1 user license per user instead of per repository (as with repository users)
  2. You can install all your products on one server (internally, support likes to call these "Monolith Servers")
    • HOWEVER, if you use a monolith server, all of your Laserfiche apps will have the same pool of hardware resources to pull from. This means that, if each program has a minimum req. of 2Gb of RAM, then you would need a minimum of 2Gb of RAM per program
      • For example, If Workflow and Import Agent are both importing documents to the repository (saved on your HDD), your users connected to the repository could notice an extended response time as the HDD is being fully utilized by those two programs. Thus, it's taking longer for the server to pull data as it has to compete with IA and WF.

Questions:

  1. If you're referring to the Windows' Client of Laserfiche, you won't need to reinstall the client as, upon login, it validates their user license against LFDS
  2. No. As long as you re-license Laserfiche Server with a license generated from LFDS using a RIO license, you should just need to restart the service.
  3. The programs are essentially the same. This is why 10.4+ packages no longer discern between RIO and Avante. You just need to ensure they're re-licensed.
  4. Either is fine. It's your discretion. However, if you plan on mixing versions or to use Laserfiche intermittently throughout your upgrade plan, you need to ensure the versions are compatible with each other.
    • For example, the 10.4 Windows client can't login to a repository if the Laserfiche server version is older than 10.4. E.g. it's not backwards compatible with older servers

Is there a compatibility chart that I can refer to?

Hi Mandi,

To my knowledge we don't have a chart that dictates what Laserfiche versions are compatible with each other; we do have one for OS and SQL compatibility however.

That said, if you look at the release notes for each of our releases on the support site, it should specify the minimum-required version necessary for the program to operate.

I've provided a link to the release notes and "list of changes" pages for most (if not all) of the 10.4 Laserfiche products below for your convenience.

https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014027/release-information-for-laserfiche-10-4-products

Hope this helps. smiley

Thanks for the link. I will refer to the release notes for compatibility questions.

Just one more question... if that's ok...

If I register the Master License in the License Manager, it's not going to change my repository license (using United licensing model), is it? Just want to make sure it's safe to create the Master License before I upgrade to Rio next week. My users will scream if they can't access Laserfiche for a whole week.

Thanks for always being a great help to me all these years! yes
