Question

Error importing file with extra long path and file name

asked on August 5, 2019

Rio 10.4.1.   My customer is importing (drag / drop) TB's of folders and files.  Some have been found to contain very long paths and file names.  The full path is still within the limit of 1023 characters and the filename is less than 255, but the complete path and filename is greater than 255.

e.g.   T:\secret\LEGAL & CORPORATE SERVICES\Corporate Secretary\3. XXXX - xx xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx Corporation\1. Meetings\z Past Years\2012\2012 XXXX attachments\6. attachments Oct 2012\att 2.3.6 xx xxxxxx xxxxx PDF copy WP Ltr from xxxxxx xxxxxxxx 18 09 2012(99999999).PDF

This is causing a 6721 error; can't find file.  The customer can only cancel out of the import.

Is there a limit on the length of the path and filename for an imported file?

I found this post which has the same issue but it does not answer the question.

I've come across this before on mass imports from Windows folders. It seems the limit is more of a Windows one as if you try to copy/cut/paste or interact with the file in Windows Explorer you are unable to.

As a workaround, we ended up mapping a drive to a folder a few levels deeper and importing from there. It was a bit of a pain as you couldn't easily determine when or where these files would turn up and when they did it took a bit of effort to work out from where the import failed.

I have received a reply on this from the Laserfiche Support development team:

"we do not support folder paths longer than 248 characters and full file name is longer than 260 characters. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The specifications do not show any limit for importing files.

The limits for folder and filename creation within Laserfiche are:

Full path limit is 1023 characters.  Filename limit is 255.

As Nigel mentioned, these are not Laserfiche limitations, they are Windows limitations. And, unfortunately, Windows will allow the creation of a file with a longer path, but return "file not found" errors when attempting to retrieve it.

Hi Miruna,

Based on the link shared by you on Naming Files / Paths limitations from Windows, it also mentioned that MAX_PATH can be increased by enabling

1. Enabling Long Paths in Registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem

Change LongPathsEnabled value to 1

2. The application manifest must also include the "longPathAware" element

I would appreciate your feedback on if this is supported by Laserfiche at "Point 2" above so that we can confirm this to customers where required by editing Registry.

Look forward to your inputs. Thank you.
