Is there a way to restrict a user from being able to change the template on a document but still allow them to change fields on the template?

For example, we have a customer and their users keep accidentally changing the template on a document when they should only be changing one field on the template. We still want them to be able to approve the document by changing the field from Pending to Approved but not allow them to change the entire template.

It sounds like you want to prevent users in the repository from changing the template that is applied to a specific document?

If so, you could accomplish this by denying "modify" on any field in that template for any users that should not be able to change the template. Any users that should be able to modify the template should be granted the ability to modify the field.

This is taking advantage of how the read-only field setting interacts with template changes, described in this previous post on template security

If your users should be able to edit all the existing fields on the template, you could add an extra field where you deny write access and deny read access so that it doesn't clutter up the field list.

Hi Ashleigh,

 

   You should be able to for a specific template. Using the Laserfiche Admin Panel, Under Metadata Management/Templates, bring up the properties for template in question. Then on the Security tab you can deny them the rights to modify the template. Although this should work, it may not be the "best practices" method to achieve then results you need.

To clarify, the template modification right is about whether or not the user can modify the definition of a template in the admin console, such as which fields are included on that template. It does not impact the ability of users to apply or remove templates from documents in the repository.
