Question

Upgrade from non-supported version

asked on April 29, 2019

I have a user with Version 5 on Win XP who wants to run on a current  OS (Win 10.) It appears that it would require that the data be migrated from version 7 to Version 9 or higher.  Are there data migrations in the interims between other versions (ie, V5 to V6 before V7, etc?) Is there a way to export from V5 so that it can be imported to a Win 10 compatible version?

Are there utilities in Version 5 that would allow output to index & image files that could then be imported into other document management software?

Thanks for any information, I know it requires delving into old memories!

Hi Lois,

I'd recommend looking at briefcases, which will allow you to take your data directly from version 5 to more current versions. It's not a full repository migration, but it will cover basic transfer of the documents themselves.

The current documentation on briefcases can be find at https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-US/userguide/#../Subsystems/client_wa/Content/PrintingExporting/Briefcasing_Your_Documents.htm. The general concepts will be the same in v5, although you'll have to refer to your local help files for the specific steps.

I can confirm this is an effective approach as we used it to transfer over a million documents during a repository consolidation.

Here are some "tips" based on our experience

  1. Configure your new environment first and see if you can get the users to start working there so you're not chasing your tail during the transition.
  2. Break things into "chunks" so your briefcases are not too large otherwise they will be harder to migrate and more prone to error.
  3. Do not delete anything from the original environment until after you have completed and verified the import just in case you need to recreate any of the briefcases (should be rare, but it did happen at least once or twice).
  4. Use a PC or server with good amount of resources to build the briefcases. I opened 10 client instances and did a briefcase for each one in parallel (10 is the max activities per session so don't try to do more than that).
  5. Have plenty of drive space on the app server(s). When you import/export a briefcase, all that data gets packed and unpacked on the app server before it is moved to the volumes, so you'll need to make sure it has enough drive space.
