What types of processes is robotic process automation (RPA) useful for?

posted on March 5, 2019 Show version history

Laserfiche offers many features to help solve different types of automation challenges - and RPA is another upcoming feature set that will even further expand an organization's ability to build more streamlined automated processes.

So how exactly will RPA features fit in to help organizations design more complete processes?

While RPA is great for reducing manual tasks and boosting productivity, it should not be seen as an end-all be-all approach to automate all types of processes, or something that will replace existing technologies.

In general, RPA is effective at automating tasks that are performed directly across the screens of applications and is particularly applicable to processes that typically are:

  • Consistent and routine
  • High volume
  • Prone to human error
  • Limited in requiring a person to make a decision
  • Manual data entry or “swivel chair” work

These could apply to common processes such as:

  • Provisioning/deprovisioning user accounts
  • Copying information from one system to another, especially for legacy systems that don't have an API available
  • Onboarding and offboarding employees
  • Scraping information from a third-party website
  • Populating a form based on information from another system

Hi there,

So I understand that an RPA, or the bots, will be able to take information from a 3rd party app, and put that information into say a Laserfiche Form.  But will it have the ability to work the other way around?  Say if my organization were to implement a timecard form/process, would RPA be able to extract the information to our accounting software?

Hi Peter,

Great question.  If the form/process is using a Laserfiche form, then yes, the bots will be able to easily.

If the form/process is a third party, then the answer is still likely yes, but it depends on the bot being able to read the information of off some UI in the process, or the information from the 3rd party process entering Laserfiche some other way (SDK, workflow, etc) and being passed along to the bot.

Thanks,

Cosette

Hi

We try to use Laserfiche Connector to extract the value of a field on a SAP screen; the only way was with OCR and was slow and not very reliable. the RPA works with SAP screens?.

Thanks

Hi Ricardo,

The initial release of bots uses the same underlying technology as Connector, so we do not expect it to currently work with more screens than Connector. Moving forward, we will be looking to enhance that underlying technology to work with more systems.

Thanks,

Cosette
