LFDS Error- "the database is invalid or the master license is already in use"

asked on February 11, 2019

Hello,

We have a customer whose LFDS server is not connected to the Internet.

Every 2-3 months the Directory Server licenses becomes invalidated resulting in the Directory Server service stopping.

As a result of the Directory Server service stopping, the Laserfiche Server stops after 7 days since it is unable to communicate with the Directory Server.

The following two errors are encountered:

Appreciate any guidance anyone might have,

No internet connection is required to keep the master license validated.

The Directory Server event logs should provide information on what is causing the license to become invalidated. Go to Application and Service Logs -> Laserfiche -> Directory Service -> Server -> Operational trace.

The two most likely things that could cause this:

  1. The machine's hardware fingerprint is changing frequently. If you open a support case for the customer or share which customer is experiencing the issue, we may be able to investigate that from here
  2. The same master license is in use in another LFDS installation. If this is a scenario you have set up for testing, you should contact your account manager to discuss about options for creating a test LFDS without causing this issue

Thanks Brianna,

I have requested the log files and have opened a LF Support case to look into the HWFP possibly changing.

I will update this thread when I have some information

Thanks,

Jeff Curtis

It can also happen if you request a domain lock for your license and you try to install off the domain, super frustrating as it took hours of banter with support to figure this out. It doesn't make it clear that your domain locked and I had never heard of anyone doing this before and had no idea a customer could request this.

Hi Chad, which version of LFDS were they using? There should be a more helpful message for domain related license mismatches starting in LFDS 11 Update 2.

Ah, good to know. They happened to be on version 10.4 after the server was restored, all the products and databases were restored from 10.4 versions so it was not a priority to update back to 11. The domain was lost but I had no idea that could be a problem, I have seen countless migrations, and disaster recovery events including lost, changed, and removed domain controllers but never run into this lock before.
