I read that updating to forms 10.4, it updates the database and that a backup is recommended. is this only the database for the forms application or does this affect the repository databasses too?

update to version 10.4

Hi Norman,
The LF Server must always be at the highest version throughout the installed suite. So if you want to upgrade Forms 10.4, you'll need to first upgrade the LF server to 10.4. So yes you'll need to back your Repo Database & Forms DB and upgrade them both together.
Hope this helps!
Technically it isn't required to keep LF server as the highest version. If you wanted to upgrade to Forms 10.4 without upgrading the server, that is fine as well, you just wouldn't be able to use some of the features like storing a form with document location property. That requires LFS 10.4.
As for the backup, when you are upgrading Forms, you only need to backup the Forms database. If you decide to upgrade your server first, you need to backup that database as well.
is document location property new to forms 10.4 ? Is there any capability in forms 10.2 that would not work if I loaded forms 10.4 but not the server? My desire is to wait a little while longer before updating the server applications. I do not want to loose capability, I need the oracle table lookup that 10.4 allows.
For the document location property, we only show the option if LFS is at least 10.4. If server is not 10.4, we hide the option. You should be able to upgrade from Forms 10.2 to 10.4 without a problem.
An upgrade for Forms would not upgrade the repository database. Conversely, upgrading the Laserfiche Server will not affect the Forms database.
Database backups are generally recommended before upgrading the software using that database (Forms, Laserfiche Server, Workflow, etc).
