Question

Can we use SQL Developer instead of Enterprise on our test server?

asked on January 10, 2019

I have been asked if it is OK to change the edition on this server from Enterprise to Developer.

Ok?

This is more a Question of Microsoft licensing.  The MS SQL Developer is not licensed for a production environment (see Editions and supported features of SQL Server 2017), so while it would work, it would be outside of the MS licensing agreement for the product.

Thanks Bert!  It would be on the test server.  Thank you again for your quick and thorough response.  TGIF!!

While I was looking into SQL Developer limitations, I ran into a couple of interesting blog posts on other considerations beyond licensing that you might be interested in:

There is no SQL Server Express edition for 2019.  Are there any plans for allowing the Laserfiche Avante for Express to also work with the 2019 Developer's edition?
