Question

Question

creating laserfiche pages from text files

asked on August 16, 2018

Hi

I'm sure this is something very basic that i'm overlooking.

My client has a folder with tons of 'text' files (File format *.05a, *.05b & *.06a) that get generated from their legacy core banking app called "laser archive"

not exactly '.txt' files but they open in notepad and display all required information.

1) if i specify the file types in Tools>options>file conversion

When i import it into LF it refuses to create laserfiche it leaves me with a "electronic file" that has the associated text, and i searchable, but the thumbnails display weird images.

Generate Laserfiche Pages is unavailable on this document.

2) if i take the files types out it simply imports as a text file (this does not generate searchable text | when i manually select "generate Searchable text" i get a pop up that directs me to kb101194)

However, If i use snapshot to import the documents in, the end result is exactly what the client is looking for. unalterable, ability to add annotations, searchable etc.

so the question is how do i use snapshot to bulk import documents? as doing it one by one, i'm afraid i'll die from old age before im finished.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Devin,

I seem to have found a work around. ill refine and automate it later.

but how i went about it was:

1) Change the file extension manually (Used CMD for bulk changes "ren *.05a *.txt")

2) Import Agent did the rest for me by importing and generating text & laserfiche pages.

3) Workflow to remove all the blank pages.

Good to go.

I'm glad it worked out. I tried Import Agent before I wrote my answer, but I must have not done it right. blush

Snapshot works by emulating a printer and accepting the rendered content from an app that thinks it's printing. You'll need to find a way to render text to a drawing surface in memory, save the resulting pixels to a TIFF, and use the SDK to import that into Laserfiche.

It's certainly possible, but it will take some custom code.

Okay so a correction to my last post, Import agent does not generate the Laserfiche Pages as required, IA gets the text documents into Laserfiche fine.

On top of IA not generating the pages an additional problem has surfaced.

When i manually generate Laserfiche Pages, the usual pop-ups appear as the conversion process moves on, however on files that have more than 600 pages, the snapshot processes freezes and eventually gives me a error saying that the document could not be printed.

If i enable the "Batch Processing Mode"  the same error occurs after the specified time limit (locked at 15 mins btw, 1000+ pages in 15mins??? nope not enough) and all files in the queue, regardless of page amount, display the error.

IA : 10.3.1.474_20180528

Avante: 10.3.0.158_20171205 (could the version mismatch be the problem?)
