Question

Laserfiche Server from 9.1.1 to 10.2.1 while also upgrading SQL Server from 2008 to 2016

asked on April 24, 2018

Good afternoon,

Our client wants to perform a Laserfiche Update (currently 9.1.1) to Laserfiche 10.2.1, the SQL Server they are using is 2008, but also they are planning to update SQL Server to SQL Server 2016. Our client wants to know if we need to wait until SQL Server Update is complete or we can install Laserfiche 10.2.1 and later they can update SQL Server?.

There are a couple of unknown things right now, I'm not sure if the update will be in place (just applying the update on top SQL Server 2008) or if they will create a new servers to host SQL Server 2016.

What would it be the best practices for both cases (update in place, new sql server machine)?

Thanks

The order doesn't really matter. You can detach the database from SQL 2008 and attach it to 2016, then update the connection string in the Laserfiche Admin Console while the server is still on 9.2.1. Or you could upgrade the server first and then repeat the steps above to move the database.

If it's an in-place update for SQL, that's going to be transparent to Laserfiche as long as the SQL instance name doesn't change. Though, I'd stop the Laserfiche Server service while upgrading SQL.
