Migrate to new server, how to deal with licensing activation

asked on March 27, 2018

I need to do a migration to new server and upgrade from 10.1 to 10.3 at the same time. The migration I can mostly figure out, however I have Avente, so my understanding is I will have to totally take down the old server and un-activate it before i can even begin the install of the new stuff. I also have all the workflow, web etc, so each of those will have to be done after the main LF server migration.

Is there an easier way to do this so that I can setup all the new stuff ahead of time? Like is there literally zero grace from LF on licensing for a migration when on Avente?

You can get an evaluation Avante system first that has the same products as you have now and give it a test run on the new server.

Contact your VAR/Regional Manager for that.

Since you mentioned Workflow, I'll add something related to moving repsoitories between servers. You want to add a redirect in the Workflow server for the new Laserfiche server before moving the repository. You should shut down the WF Server and Subscriber while the repository is being moved.

I'd suggest you do the upgrade in place on your current server from 10.1 to 10.3 first, and then do the migration afterwards. Doing a project like that in stages is, in my experience, a little easier. I may be jinxing you, but I've never had a problem upgrading from 10.x to 10.3; do a full backup to roll it back if you need to.

Do you know how to manually release a license with the command line? If you do that on your current server, then install your new server, and it doesn't work out, it normally doesn't take more than 30 minutes to release from the new host and renew the license back to the old host.

If you've got a large enterprise environment with zero tolerance for downtime you should consider an upgrade to Rio.
