Question

XML editing for Quick Fields sessions

asked on May 18, 2017

Hello Everyone, I have a project that involves 400+ Quick Fields classifications broken into 3 sessions. I have made some edits to the XML inside of the session files. I'm getting some weird behavior and I'm wondering if there is a program that would look the session file over for bad XML code. I use Notepad++ currently and if there is a way to do it in that, I haven't found it yet. Thanks for the help.

Notepad++ has plugins that can check for invalid XML, such as XML Tools (the one I use).

That said, it is quite possible to have valid XML that does not translate to a valid QF session.

We recommend against modifying the XML directly, but if you do, try only making changes in small increments (and using backups). That way, you know which if your changes was not compatible and can revert to your last working version.

I know its recommended to not edit the XML, however, I'm working with 400+ Classifications. If there was a tool that let me do mass updates to all the classifications since all these classification have the same template, I would use that. There are many solutions that QF can provide, but one that we use a lot is processing invoices. Abbyy has a invoice scanning solution that removes the need for classifications but is also expensive and need a very high volume client. I want to use QF but I feel like I'm getting to the limitations of the program. I have had QF session go bad with no modifications to the XML and had LF support tell me to just rebuild them. That where I'm at again with LF support.

At this point I would want to request some QF updates.

1. A tool that would let me make an edit to one classification and push it to all in the session.

2. A better startup process that QF runs that can check for error in the code.

Also, what would be an example of a valid XML but then it not translating to the session correctly so that I can maybe spot the issues myself?

Hi Lucas,

In an ideal world we'd be able to fulfill these requests right away. But I want to be transparent with you that unfortunately we're in the same situation I described in this post a while back. I can assure you we're still working hard on meeting these use cases better, but it's a big project. With finite resources, we often have to make tough choices, and it's not feasible for our team to enhance support for 400+ document classes in the existing architecture while also continuing to make significant progress towards this bigger project.

I understand Tessa. What really tough about my case is that when I run the sessions myself, QF will power through the errors and not get hung. The real issue I have is that my solution includes QF agent and that is what started my LF support case. When the session are ran by agent, the get hung or error out and Alex said it could be because of errors in the code. I can run the session myself and the session wont die, but if I make QF agent run it, its get stuck and it moves the files to a processed folder without sending them to the repo.
