Testing Office Integration Before Deployment

asked on April 19, 2017

Is there a tool or utility for testing the office integration components in the discovery phase before deployment? We've had some situations where it would be useful to have something like a small test utility that can be put on a flash drive, plugged into a workstation, and run to verify that there won't be issues with a specific install of Office, or with Group Policy restricting user rights in Office.

This happens when you have large organizations with tightly controlled Group Policy, and would save a lot of time in troubleshooting if there were a utility to test the integration.

Hi Glen,

You can install the full Laserfiche client for testing purposes without the need for a license. However to test connectivity to a Laserfiche server you will need to obviously have a server, and a license. The ports etc. that Laserfiche uses are pretty well documented in the help files (80, 5050 and 5051). When it comes to group policy, other than ports in use, Laserfiche should in essense function like any other program locally, writing data to the users temp directory, HKCU in the registry and accessing appdata etc.

I guess if you really wanted to test the system, you could temporarily install your VAR kit or request an eval license from your Laserfiche account manager.

Hope this helps! smiley

The problem I've run into is more subtle than the Client just failing to work at the outset.

Some larger corporate infrastructures have strict and finely grained Group Policies applied to their end users, so they can only perform the precise functions that apply to their jobs. For example, macro execution is locked down on a function by function basis in Excel instead of just a broad shutdown of, or broad permission to run, all macros.

So you could find yourself in a situation where you get most of the way through a deployment, and Office Integration starts breaking in novel, subtle, and difficult to troubleshoot ways.

It would be nice to have a utility to run on a PC at the very early stages of a project that will run through all the possible interactions between the Client (and other tools like Workflow) and the Office software. There are Office integration testers on MSDN, but I was hoping that maybe the Laserfiche QA team had a utility or set of scripts that's buried in some obscure corner of the support site.

This isn't something I have ever seen or heard of, need LF to chime in on this one... wink

That will be a kind of tool if LF have it. I believe the best scenario will be to have a trial LF environment on your client site with all its policies etc.. and you do the tests. It will require some investment but it might worth it..
