Question

File Upload Size Forms

asked on December 6, 2016

Hello,

I'm using a LF Form to allow users to upload images of receipts to the repository.  I'm finding that the mobile phones are taking better quality images, and thus creating larger files, than we want/need.  Is there a way for me to compress/change the file size between Form upload and saving to the repository?

I know that settings can be changed on the user's phone itself, but they can and will change that to suit the needs of regular everyday picture taking. So I do not feel this is an option/solution.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Darren

Hello Darren,

As I understand it, when users upload images to a Form in the mobile client, a Compression pop-up box appears asking the user whether they want to upload the “Original Quality” image, or a “Compressed” version. Your users should be able to select the “Compressed” option when uploading to ensure that the files don’t take up unnecessary space. This isn’t something that users would have to adjust on their phones ahead of time so I believe that this option should suffice.

If you have the programming knowledge, you may also be able to create an SDK script that runs in a Workflow to compress the files. Otherwise, there is not any out of the box functionality that would allow you to do this.

Best regards,

Adam

Hi Adam,

We had briefly looked at using the App to upload pictures previously mentioned here:

https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/111086/Limit-User-Access--Assign-Defaults-Mobile-App

In short there were two concerns:

  1. User access to the repository via the mobile and fear of accidental deletion through touch screen use
  2. The number of ‘clicks’ required for the user to upload the image to the correct location, input required metadata, and set image quality and ease of input/’buy-in’ from users.

This was when I built a basic form to handle what we wanted. The form offered a simple way for the user to upload the image with the minimal amount of ‘clicks’/info input and limited access to the rest of the repository.  However, file sizing became the issue.

After your suggestion yesterday I used the Mobile App to access the Form, which adds a few ‘clicks’ to the process, but nothing major, and would steer users away from the repository itself.  I noticed the compression option you mentioned but have run into an issue with it.

When I take the picture to upload, I get the compression pop-up box you mentioned

And choose Compressed

But when the file actually uploads to the Form for submission, the compression seems to have not worked/was ignored/reversed by the Form upload

I should mention that this is happening on an Android phone running Android 6.0.1, but the compression seems to work fine on an iphone running 9.2.1

Hello Darren,

To address a few points

1) In regards to the image compression in respect to the file size, that issue has  already been known to us, and is already fixed and will be pushed out in our next coming release. The App release is speculated to be sometime end of the month of December 2016. But note this schedule is always subject to change. But that will be the ballpark.

EDITED: In regards to the App use-case, you(Darren) asked similar questions here. Since this thread was more about Forms upload, i'll conclude the questions here. But in regards to your concerns in regards to accidental deletion and image upload, we can discuss this on the other thread.
