We noticed that our folders aren't automatically refreshing when their contents change. Do we have to do anything special to make this work? I looked in Options as well as WA config but couldn't find anything.

Web Access 10 folder refresh?
I've just installed WebAccess 10.1 in hopes that this would be available.
Am I correct that it didn't make the cut and we're still waiting to get this feature?
It seems that this is a pretty major shortcoming considering that many people use specific folders to see whether there is work to be done and once certain conditions are met the document moves into another folder.
Currently this means they have to hit refresh to see if there are any items left or new ones came in.
Hi Boris,
No, this is not present yet. It's discussed a bit here: https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/96195/Questions-about-101
Pardon the double-reply, but that said - while we don't have a built-in refresh button in 10.1, we DO have specific instructions on how to create one using custom actions. In fact, it's our primary example in the documentation and has the exact code needed for it. Check out: https://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/10/en-US/administration/#../Subsystems/WAConfiguration/Content/custom-actions.htm. That will allow you to push out a refresh button in the meantime until we are able to incorporate a more complete notification solution.
It's the first example right under the CustomActions.xml section of that page.
Any updates as to when we might see folder refresh in Web Access. A lot of our users are getting unhappy about needing to hit refresh to see if the document moved from their folder after they've assigned relevant field values that prompts workflows to organize them.
Hi Boris,
Have you tried adding the custom refresh button as described in my prior comment?
I haven't. There's really not much difference between a custom action button that requires two clicks to execute vs. hitting F5 to refresh the browser.
The fundamental problem for our users is that they have no automatic feedback of anything happening in the folder they're currently observing like they're used to from the desktop client.
The voices to return to the desktop client are getting louder, putting us in a bit of a bind since we would much prefer to stick with webaccess for a variety of operational reasons.
Hi Boris,
Is that the primary reason people are looking to return to the desktop Client? We had gotten a lot of complaints from people using the desktop Client that their folders would shift out from under them, which is why we were looking into other methods for Web Access. We have notifications planned, but they aren't implemented yet. We can look into bumping up the schedule though.
Yes, most people, here at least, want to observe that their actions are having an effect. When they change field values to approve/reject, or set document types that cause the documents to be routed, they want to see those docs get removed from the current folder.
I'm assuming other people might have different ideas/requirements, so maybe provide two mechanics, selectable via a preference,
1) An option that would automatically refresh the values/columns/entries
2) An option that would merely prompt the user that a change occurred and to refresh manually.
This way people(or an organization) could decide for themselves which approach works best for their purposes.
Even better would be if this option could be applied on a folder basis with the ability to push it down the folder hierarchy :)
Is that the primary issue people are having with Web Access, or are there other items?
I can't promise notifications right away, but we'll see about bumping up the timetable. Obviously people are looking for it. Thanks for your feedback on that. We've addressed a couple bugs related to in-folder updating in the upcoming 10.1 update 1, due out in a week or so, but it's not a whole-scale notification system.
The one item I can think of is the location of the Save button in the viewer. When looking at the preview in the folder there is a save button that appears when changes to the field values are made at the bottom right. When looking at the document itself, the save button is at the top left and doesn't appear at the bottom right when making changes to the fields. This has confused a number of users and they keep looking for it under the list of fields. Maybe add a secondary save button with the same behavior as you have during the preview?
Interesting, that's a good point. I'll speak with our user experience people about that and see if they have any suggestions. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi Justin, thanks for your response on this post. Just to confirm as my client is also wanting a automatic refresh for their Web Access folder. Is that coming out in the new 10.1 update 1 as mentioned above?
No, it's not in 10.1 u1, which is specifically bug fixes. We have it near the top of our list for enhancements though.
Thanks Justin. Looking forward to it's release. Something small but goes along way for the users.
This feature will be available in the upcoming service pack.
Hey Ege,
There were enough issues in the past with complaints about folders refreshing out from under people (losing their current selection, etc.) that we wanted to be a little more cautious in HOW we implemented this - especially now that most of the document manipulation, such as metadata, is happening right there in the folder tree. It should be in the service pack though, as Robbie notes.
Understood, that makes sense. We don't have any clients on WA 10 yet. We just noticed it during development for one of our projects.
I was actually talking to Jonathan about it yesterday. It would be great if, when a document a user has selected disappears (e.g. gets routed), a small notification message appears on the bottom right corner or something that says "entry routed to <new location>" so that the user can "follow" the document if they choose to do so.
This is just a thought though. Looking forward to the service pack.
The current plan is indeed to do some sort of notification like 'this folders content has changed, click here to update', like Answers now has. Although that's for the current folder, not to follow ones that are no longer there.
Hi,
I would like to add an additional note to this exchange.
In WebAccess V9, there was a refresh button available so that users could decide when they want to refresh the folder content along with columns info. This method was way faster than pressing F5 (which was reloading the whole page).
In WebAccess V10.0, the refresh button is not there anymore so we are forces to press that F5 and this takes time to reload.
Is Laserfiche going to add that Refresh button in the next service pack?
